[[Alonoe]] and [[Elrao]] implyimplied that the Ire hashad been working on their planstrategy to take over Preservation's power for quite some time,{{msh ref|5|2}} although they did consider other uses for the orb before settling on their plan.{{wob ref|11537}} The orb iswas critical to their scheme{{msh ref|5|3}} and they arewere actively monitoring the failing health of Preservation's Vessel, [[Leras]], because his death willwould be their window to act.{{msh ref|5|2}} The Ire arewere concerned about [[Ruin]] sensing the orb, but one of their members placesplaced wards on the orb that she believesbelieved to be completely effective.{{msh ref|5|3}}

[[Kelsier]], as a [[Cognitive Shadow]], discoversdiscovered the Ire's fortress in the [[Cognitive Realm]] and overhearsoverheard their plans to take the power of a Shard.{{msh ref|5|2}} He snoopssnooped around the fortress and findsfound the notebook with details on the orb.{{msh ref|5|2}} He knowsknew from previous conversations with Leras that Connection must exist to Ascend as a Shard, and realizesrealized that the Ire planplanned to use the orb to artificially create the necessary Connection.{{msh ref|5|2}} Partly due to his friendship with Leras, he vowsvowed to steal it.{{msh ref|5|2}}

Kelsier realizesrealized that the orb iswas too difficult to steal directly from the fortress, so he waitswaited about a week until an expedition of the Ire and some guards leaveleft on their mission to take control of Preservation.{{msh ref|5|3}} Four of the Ire members carrycarried decoy glass orbs, while Alonoe carriescarried the real one.{{msh ref|5|3}} Kelsier stealsstole one decoy orb and confirmsconfirmed that the authentic one iswas in Alonoe's pack.{{msh ref|5|3}} He pretendspretended to be Ruin and causescaused chaos and confusion in the group, eventually isolating Alonoe and forcing her to give up the orb.{{msh ref|5|3}}

Kelsier travelstraveled as quickly as he cancould to find Preservation, hoping that the orb willwould be able to save Leras.{{msh ref|6|1}} He eventually findsfound a way to talk to Leras and revealsrevealed the orb; Leras seemsseemed to recognize its power, but tellstold Kelsier that it cannotcould not help him.{{msh ref|6|1}} As Kelsier triestried to communicate with [[Vin]] in [[Fadrex City]], Ruin appearsappeared; he cannotcould not sense the orb and wonderswondered why he did not sense Kelsier sooner.{{msh ref|6|1}} Kelsier realizesrealized that the Ire's wards on the orb arewere effective and were able to hide him temporarily.{{msh ref|6|3}} Kelsier continuescontinued to try and reach out to Vin but Ruin interferesinterfered.{{msh ref|6|2}} Kelsier asksasked Leras about the orb again, and Leras tellstold him that he iswas "already dead" and cancouldn't be healed, and also impliesimplied that the orb would not work correctly with Vin while she still hashad a [[Hemalurgic]] spike.{{msh ref|6|2}}

As Leras diesdied, Kelsier decidesdecided to use the orb himself despite Leras's warnings that the power belongsbelonged to Vin.{{msh ref|6|4}} He smashessmashed it open using a knife that he was previously given by [[Nazh]], and the liquid sprayssprayed over his body.{{msh ref|6|4}} He immediately seessaw glowing threads connecting him to everything that he cancould perceive.{{msh ref|6|4}} Using the threads and the magic of the orb, he iswas able to somehow instinctively draw in Preservation's power, Ascending to become a Shard.{{msh ref|6|4}} Although he quickly realizesrealized that he cannotcould not overpower Ruin,{{msh ref|6|4}} Kelsier did use the orb in the way that the Ire intended,{{wob ref|1561}} and iswas later able to give the power to Vin.{{msh ref|6|8}}
