Surrounding Elantris and technically not part of Elantris itself are four smaller cities, bordered by low walls corresponding to the four circles in Aon Rao.{{book ref|elantris|21}} The cities are named after the Aons for the four cardinal directions, according to their locations relative to Elantris: Ake (west), Ato (north), [[Kae]] (east),{{file ref|Elantris-Kae Map.jpg}} and Toa (south).{{book ref|elantris|61}} The cities are dense enough when populated that they require magical support from Elantris to survive; after the Reod, Iadon conscripts the inhabitants as laborers for his new government and the cities are left abandoned,{{book ref|elantris|25}} except for Kae, which he makes the capital of Arelon.{{book ref|elantris|2}}
