This destroyed their reputation and their finances were starting to crumble. In a last attempt to save face, they attempted to withdraw from Luthadel. The evening before their withdrawal, many members were assassinated and those remaining were supposedly attacked by bandits on the canal routes.{{ref|b|mb1|c|28}} In actuality that had been the work of [[House Hasting]].{{ref|b|mb1|c|28}}
