The Desolations are a world-hopping event

Hypothesis

The Desolation is a worldhopping event, and either creates a breach directly to Braize, or transfers people or things from Braize to Roshar.

Evidence

  • Darkness, suspected of being the Herald Nalan, has knowledge of Braize and implies that the Desolations do not exist on Roshar[1]
  • Odium is suspected to be located on Braize, also called Damnation by Vorinism
  • The Heralds are tortured in Damnation, or Braize, thus Odium or his agents have the capability to bring things or people between worlds
  • The return of the Heralds occurs at the same time as the Desolation
  • The Desolations are preceded by the arrival of a previously unknown on Roshar creature known as the Midnight Essence, seemingly unrelated to the Desolation
  • The True Desolation is related to a giant storm, the Everstorm, which could have investiture powers on the same scale as the Highstorms
  • The Spren are particularly wary of the Desolation, and sensitive to its arrival. Spren live in the cognitive realm, the known method of worldhopping
  • The voidbringers were said to be cast back to the 'Tranquiline Halls', a Vorinism belief that corresponds potentially to Yolen (the origin of humanity), or possibly to Ashyn
  • The Odium spren began to appear around the time of the Desolation, and Odium is believed to be on Braize
  • Brandon has stated there were no Desolations prior to humanity's arrival on Roshar, which roughly coincides with the arrival of the Shards Honor, Cultivation and Odium (to our knowledge)

Implications

If the theory is true:

  • Odium or his agents (such as the Voidbringers or the Unmade) have sufficient power to move themselves or other objects between worlds, or to create a temporary method to cross worlds usable by anyone (termed as a 'breach' for now).
  • It's quite possible that the Parshendi are then a native race to Braize, and migrated to Roshar during the Desolations (or invaded). This would identify well with things such as the apparent difference between Parshendi and native evolved Roshar life and species (Notably the Aimians, a confirmed non-human sentient species that are traceable to early human residence on Roshar), and why no Parshendi are visible during Dalinar's visions of the Desolations (while things like the Midnight Essence are noted).
  • Odium is not trapped on Roshar itself, but instead on Braize (or perhaps a Rosharan Moon), and uses his agents or investiture to cause the Desolations remotely.
