War of Reckoning (1167-1174)
The Chasmfiend Hunt
Adolin and his brother Renarin accompanyaccompanied King Elhokar and the Highprinces Dalinar, Sadeas, and Vamah on a chasmfiend hunt, and Adolin spendsspend the early part of the trip worrying about the state of his father's mind and his reputation. He worriesworried that Sadeas willwould make a move against his father now that Dalinar iswas appearing weak to the eyes of Alethi society. Adolin hashad been given effective command of the Kholin army by his father and restrictions havehad been placed on his dueling as per the Alethi Codes of War. To make matters worse Dalinar revealsrevealed he iswas considering leaving the Shattered Plains, a plan Adolin knowsknew willwould ruin his father's reputation. sa1

When the chasmfiend appearsappeared on the wrong plateau, threatening unarmed attendants, guests and scribes, Adolin helpshelped his father and Elhokar kill it. During the fight, Adolin iswas momentarily awed by seeing his father display the prowess that earned him the title of Blackthorn.sa1 Afterwards Adolin overseesoversaw the cleanup, happy to be doing something, while the other lighteyes on the trip relaxrelaxed leisurely. When Sadeas insultsinsulted his father, Adolin iswas quick to defend him, though his manner in doing so iswas brash and leadsled to a rebuke from his father and a gentle restraint from Renarin. Sadeas then turnsturned his attention to his brother, and Adolin nearly summonssummoned his Shardblade but stopsstoped when he iswas ordered to by Dalinar.sa1

Later Dalinar takestook Adolin aside to inspect the king's saddle as Elhokar had requested of them. Adolin quickly realisesrealized that Elhokar believesbelieved the girth was cut deliberately and, pointsannoyed, pointed out his cousin's worsening paranoia. Adolin expresses his annoyance about the factand that he and his father seemseemed to have become Elhokar's bodyguards. Despite thetheir misgivings, both he and Dalinar agreeagreed that if the girth was cut there may behave been a plot to kill the king, as Alethi lighteyes arewere fond of their overly complicated plots. Dalinar assigned Adolin the task of investigating this further. Adolin wonderswondered if Sadeas may behave been behind it, but Dalinar shutsshut down the suggestion. andHe showsexplained to Adolin that though they and Sadeas both havehad investeda vested interest and desire to keep Elhokar safe and willwould work together to manipulate other highprinces for the King's benefit. Dalinar then revealsrevealed Gavilar's final words. Adolin connectsconnected this to his father's presumed delusions and assumesassumed they arewere a product of guilt over Gavilar's death. Dalinar hopeshoped Adolin willwould learn to see the importance of the Codes. He then asksasked Adolin to at least respect Sadeas. Adolin reluctantly agrees but reiterates that he does not trust the other highprinceagreed and requests thatat his fatherinsistence atDalinar leastagreed to consider that Sadeas is not as committed to Elhokar as he is and maymight be playing him. Dalinar says he will consider Adolin's concernsthem.sa1

Elhokar later queriesqueried them about their opinions on the strap. When Dalinar tellstold him that while it may have been cut there iswas no definitive proof, the king insistsinsisted that there iswas a plot to kill him and that perhaps someone on the hunt had planned it. Adolin catchescaught the king giving them a suspicious look, and when Elhokar leavesleft he asksasked his father if he sawhad seen it too. Dalinar cutscut him off and tellstold Adolin he willwould talk to Elhokar about it later and gives his son the task of looking into the cut girth further. When the bridges finally arrivearrived, Adolin resumesresumed control of the army, directing its movements back towards the camps.sa1

Two days later Adolin informed his father of his findings. Dalinar and Adolin agreed that the best action would be for Dalinar to tell Elhokar that they had found nothing. Adolin brought up the visions, but Dalinar ended the conversation as they arrived at one of the king's feasts. Before they parted ways, Dalinar ordered Adolin and Renarin to restrict their drinking.sa1
Kadash asks Adolin if he has come to the temple because of the lack of progress he has made on his Calling. Though embarrassed by this fact Adolin instead asks Kadash if Dalinar is going mad or if he is really seeing visions. Adolin informs Kadash of the visions and how they seem to be about the Knights Radiant and possibly even the future. Kadash is visibly disturbed by the news. He explains to Adolin that Dalinar is not to be mocked and that if the visions are true than it is something between Dalinar and the Almighty but insinuates rather heavily that it may be PTSD. He tells Adolin that if anyone is to help him it must be Adolin himself as it would be unacceptable for anyone else who is not family.sa1

During the feast, Adolin found his father once more and informed him that he had dueled three different men who had accused both Dalinar and House Kholin of being cowards and of asking the king to abandon the Vengeance Pact. Dalinar told Adolin to ignore what others said or thought. He added that the rumors were true. Dalinar had told the king in confidence they needed to end the war and return to Alethkar. Dalinar asked for Adolin's trust and promised to talk later, but Adolin replied he was worried that the visions may be delusions. His father then acknowledged Adolin was right to be worried about their House's reputation. Dalinar thought that Elhokar would keep quiet about their conversation. He explained to Adolin he had suggested winning the war by striking the Parshendi directly.sa1 Once the Vengeance Pact was fulfilled they would be able to go back home and stabilize Alethkar.sa1 Adolin agreed with the his father's plan without objection, to Dalinar's surprise. Adolin explained he could support a strike, but that they would need a solid plan to get everyone on board with it. They planned to slowly get the highprinces to start working together with them to build trust. As far as responding to the gossip, they disagreed when Adolin wanted to defend the house's honor. Dalinar countered by saying that dueling others wouldn't change how they thought about the Kholins. He would publish an official refutation, which Adolin admitted was better than nothing.sa1
Two days later Adolin informs his father of his findings. He has been to three different leatherworkers who all have different opinions. The strap had been sliced but the strap was also worn beforehand and it was not necessarily cut by a knife. Dalinar tells Adolin he will tell Elhokar that they have run into a dead end and will pursue other avenues of investigation, which Adolin agrees is the best course of action. He then tries to bring up the subject of his father's latest episode but Dalinar is quick to end the line of questioning as they arrive at the king's feast. Before they part ways Dalinar orders Adolin and Renarin to limit themselves to only one cup of blue wine and then stick to orange for the rest of the evening which earns a complaint from Adolin who begrudgingly obeys.sa1

Just as Adolin iswas about to leave, his father he spotsspotted his aunt Navani, whoand heAdolin ishugged quick to hugher affectionately. She asksasked him how his courting iswas going, andwhich Dalinar likens itlikened to a dance in which the music is fast anddance thewith changing partners change often. She tellstold Adolin that it is good he has not settled down and that it iswas only old people who should have to be boring. Adolin thanksthanked her and then leavesleft to tell Renarin that their aunt hashad returned. Later that evening Elhokar announced that he had named Sadeas as Highprince of Information and the investigation was no longer in House Kholin's hands.sa1
During the feast Adolin finds his father once more and informs him that he has dueled three different men who have accused both Dalinar and House Kholin of being cowards and of asking the king to abandon the Vengeance Pact. Dalinar tells Adolin to let them speak as they wish but Adolin asks him if it is true that Dalinar really did ask to abandon the Vengence Pact. When his father reveals that it is true Adolin groans and says he had his suspicions. Dalinar asks Adolin if he trusts him and Adolin replies that he wants to but he worries that his father's visions may be delusions. Dalinar promises that they will talk later which pacifies Adolin somewhat. His father then tells Adolin he is right to be worried about their House's reputation. Dalinar thought that Elhokar would keep quiet about what they had discussed but he clearly did not and he neglected to mention that Dalinar had later suggested winning the war by striking the Parshendi directly.sa1 Once the Vengeance Pact is fulfilled they would be able to go back home and stabilize Alethkar. Adolin agrees with the his father's plan without objection, which surprises Dalinar somewhat. Adolin explains that striking harder is something he can easily get behind but that they will need a solid plan to get everyone on board with it. Dalinar originally was the architect for the way things are done presentlysa1 and the other highprinces would use this as a counter argument. Dalinar postulates that they could win if all ten armies march together but Adolin points out that it would require a lot of trust and that if the highprinces start fighting while on the march it could be disastrous. He looks at Sadeas while he says his. They set up a plan to try and get another highprince to work with them, to see if it can even be done. Adolin then asks what they are going to do about the gossip. His father promises to release an official refutation but Adolin wonders why he does not duel instead or task Adolin with the honor of the house. Dalinar explains it is because of the Codes and letting Adolin duel would be the same as letting himself duel. Adolin tells Dalinar that the visions, the Codes and The Way of Kings have all changed him. Dalinar wonders, internally, if Adolin may have a point. His father then explains that they can't force others to follow their example and that duelling them because they think House Kholin is composed of cowards is not going to change the way they think. Adolin admits that an official refutation is better than nothing at least.sa1

Just as Adolin is about to leave his father he spots his aunt Navani, who he is quick to hug affectionately. She asks him how his courting is going and Dalinar likens it to a dance in which the music is fast and the partners change often. She tells Adolin that it is good he has not settled down and that it is only old people who should have to be boring. Adolin thanks her and then leaves to tell Renarin that their aunt has returned.sa1

Later that evening Elhokar announces that he has named Sadeas as Highprince of Information and the investigation in no longer in House Kholin's hands. His father had just been out manoeuvered.sa1

A House Divided
Days later Adolin goes to find his father at the Gallery of Maps. When he asks how the meeting with Highprince Roion went Dalinar informs him that it did not go as well as they had hoped. Adolin quotes some scripture to Dalinar's surprise and Adolin reveals that he is courting Malasha Seveks now after things went rocky with Janala.sa1 Adolin asks his father if he plans to approach the rest of the highprinces and Dalinar indicates that he does. Adolin then informs his father that Sadeas is asking for permission to enter their warcamp to continue the investigation and tells his father that he thinks Sadeas is going to move against them as he is in an ideal position to shift blame for the assassination attempt on House Kholin. Dalinar points out that denying Sadeas's authority would make them look guilty but that he also trusts Sadeas because of advice the visions gave him. Adolin is not pleased to hear this and point blank accuses his father of betting the future of their house on his visions. Dalinar denies this and promises that if Sadeas did make a move he wouldn't stand by and watch. This is not enough for Adolin.sa1

Days later, Adolin went to see his father at the Gallery of Maps. Adolin revealed that he was now courting Malasha Seveks. They discussed Dalinar's meeting with Highprince Roion, who declined to work together. So, Dalinar planned to approach the others. Adolin brought up that Sadeas asked permission to enter their warcamp for his investigation. Adolin was worried about Sadeas' motives, but Dalinar pointed out that denying Sadeas's authority would undermine the king's as well besides making the Kholins look guilty.
Having heard enough his father dismisses him promptly and as Adolin leaves he tells himself that it was something that had to be said but admits he feels sick that he was the one who had to say it. sa1

To Adolin's dismay, Dalinar stated he was trusting Sadeas because of the visions. Adolin then accused his father of betting their house's future on the visions. Dalinar attempted to reassure Adolin by stating he would not stand by idle to see their house fall, and dismissed Adolin.sa1
Dalinar and Adolin speak to one another some days later when Dalinar calls for the army to mobilize for a plateau skirmish. Adolin apologizes for where and how he said his grievances to his father, though he is not sorry for voicing them. Just as they are about to set off a messenger approaches with news that Sadeas is demanding admittance to the warcamp. Dalinar allows it though Adolin is quick to suppose that Sadeas is out for their blood. When they approach him Sadeas says he can conduct his investigation as they head out, making a snide comment about their speed given that they use the slow chull carried bridges. Adolin tries to object to Sadeas coming along as it will distract the soldiers but Dalinar overrides Adolin's suggestions. They leave Sadeas to his investigation as they head out.sa1

Adolin, along with Dalinar lead the charge against the Parshendi. During the battle, when the Thrill leaves Dalinar, Adolin is quick to come help and protect his father in the moment of distraction. When the battle is won Adolin harvests the gemheart.sa1

While doing their inspections of the army, and viewing a test of their plans for bridges modeled after Sadeas's quicker ones, Adolin spends his time worrying about Dalinar. His father is beginning to appear more fragile and distressed, though he notes he is probably the only one who notices and admits internally that this frightens him. Dalinar is strained and Adolin reflects that when his father is strained he becomes detached and cold with other people, as he is becoming now. When the bridge fails the tests they decide to at least attempt redesigning it and move on.sa1

As they move away from the staging ground Dalinar asks Adolin why there are no shardplate-like suits for workmen and why the Radiants only fashioned weapons. Adolin admits he doesn't know but theorizes that perhaps it was because war was the most important thing around. Dalinar agrees dejectedly, marking the fact as just another condemnation of the Radiants. As they continue on their inspection Dalinar asks Adolin if he feels the Thrill. This startles Adolin as the bloodlust is not usually discussed amongst soldiers but he acknowledges that he does. Dalinar doesn't reply when Adolin wonders if everyone does and he is quick to catch the pain in his father's eyes. Adolin wishes for his father to return to his confident, if a bit deluded, self as it is better than this.sa1

Later, Adolin and his father inspected the army while discussing several topics like the purpose of Plate, the Thrill, the faith of the war camps, and the gemheart economy. During the conversation, Adolin was worried about his father's state of mind. At some point he got distracted and thought about Malasha and the new woman he was interested in, Danlan Morakotha. Dalinar made Adolin inspect the Fifth Battalion for him, and afterwards his father praised him for his leadership. They went on to interview the men that were investigated by Sadeas. The men directly made it clear they were loyal to Kholin and hadn't told anything to Sadeas. Adolin noted that if they had acted this way around Sadeas, it would have seemed incriminating.sa1
As they continue on their inspections Adolin allows his mind to wander, thinking about Malasha and a new woman who has caught his interest: Danlan Morakotha. He also remarks on the good things his father has done for the camp, such as paying half the cost for the families of darkeyed soldiers to come to the Shatterd Plains. Dalinar wonders what will happen to the warcamps when they leave, as they are now a de facto Alethi province. Dalinar continues, wondering what will happen to the value of gemhearts if they keep capturing them at the rate they are. He tells Adolin that these will be things he will have to consider and Adolin wonders what his father means.sa1

Dalinar makes Adolin inspect of the Fifth Battalion for him. When he is finished his father tells him he has learned well though Adolin believes Dalinar is reading too much into a simple inspection. When they interview the men Sadeas investigated the other day his father makes Adolin take the lead in the questioning. The men reveal that Sadeas—who they all agree is an eel—asked them what their duties around camp were. They tell Adolin that they revealed nothing to Sadeas, or at least nothing that would get House Kholin in trouble. Adolin notes that if they acted this way around Sadeas it would seem more incriminating than if they had cut the girth themselves. The men tell them that they didn't notice any tampering with the king's saddle but that no one was exactly looking for it either. When they leave Adolin and Dalinar agree that while the men are loyal they may have made matters more difficult for them.sa1

In the evening, before their talk with Jasnah, asksAdolin tried to talk to his father, but Dalinar wasn't ready to discuss things. Adolin and Renarin watch over their father during his vision and when he returns they look uncomfortable and tense. Adolin helps untie Dalinar while Renarin fetches wine. Adolin watches his father until Dalinar asks if it really is that difficult to watch. Adolin and Renarin tell him that he thrashes about and speaks in gibberish. When Dalinar uses this as further proof for his abdication Adolin tells him that the episodes easily containable and that he simply does not want his father using the delusions to make decisions about House Kholin's future. Dalinar tells Adolin that he does not think they are delusions and that they are real visions, even if he accepts the fact that it was wrong to automatically assume they were from the Almighty. He postulates that they could be the product of the Old Magic but that they are not a product of his curse or boon. Adolin is shocked to learn that the Old Magic is real and that his father has searched it out.sa1

The argument continues with Adolin saying that they can still contain it. If his father has an episode on the battlefield then they will deal with it as it comes. He does not like the fact that even now his father's decisions, and the decisions he makes for his sons and their house, are being ruled by the delusions. Renarin then suggestssuggested that they find a way to prove the visions arewere true, and they sendsent for Navani. While Renarin iswas gone Adolin asksasked his father what they willwould do if Adolin iswas proven right. Dalinar confessesconfessed that a part of him wisheswished that Adolin was and that it might be better for Alethkar. When everything iswas set up, they movemoved to the King's island, where Dalinar directly asksasked Sadeas about the results of his investigation. Navani expressesexpressed her worry, particularly over the terms that the duel shallwould end with surrender rather than breaking the shardplateShardplate. When Renarin doeschecked his check that Adolin hashad followed his routine, they discoverdiscovered that Adolin's mother's chain iswas missing. This momentarily throwsthrew Adolin off balance, though he startsstarted to recover as they put on his platePlate. When his opponents enterentered the ring, there arewere four of them rather than the two that Adolin had assumed. Instead of forfeiting, Adolin signalssignaled for the duel to commence. He recognizesrecognized the three Shardbearers Relis had brought with him: Elit, Abrobadar and Jakamav. sa2

Adolin attacksattacked, trying to minimize any attempt they havehad to assess and respond. He doesdid alright for a while but eventually becomesbecame overwhelmed. When he attemptsattempted to yield, the Shardbearers stopstopped him, and Highjudge Istow doesndidn't, or chooseshad choosen not to, hear him. Adolin realizesrealized that if he leavesleft the duel alive he'd be doing so as a cripple. Renarin joinsjoined the duel with just his shardblade andShardblade; Adolin triestried to convince him to leave, but Renarin refusesrefused. Relis tellstold him that so long as Adolin doesdid not surrender or make his cousin end the duel, Abrobadar willwould not hurt Renarin but; if Adolin doesdid attempt any of those things, Renarin willwould die. sa2

Kaladin joinsjoined the duel as well, keeping the duel still at a disadvantage. He getsgot to Adolin, and the two formformed a plan: Kaladin willwould keep one distracted and keep an eye on Renarin if he cancould while Adolin takestook on the other two. Adolin tellstold him that they mightneeded useto Renarinbe asprepared leverageif againsttheir them, opponents soused theyRenarin needas toleverage beagainst prepared for itthem. Two-on-one actually seemsseemed to be an even match for Adolin. Adolin managesmanaged to break Elit's breastplate, incapacitating him, and Kaladin forcesforced him to surrender. When Elit surrenderssurrendered, Abrobadar abandonsabandoned Renarin and joinsjoined Relis and Jakamav in fighting Adolin. When Kaladin runsran to help, Relis and Jakamav abandonabandoned Adolin to take out Kaladin. This leavesleft only Jakamav, whowhom Adolin iswas pinned beneath, restraining him. Kaladin putsput his knife to Jakamav and forcesforced him to surrender. Adolin makesmade Kaladin help him out of his Shardplate. When Elhokar offersoffered the King's Boon, Adolin requestsrequested The Right of Challenge against Sadeas. Though he's was wearing several weeks' growth of beard on his face, Adolin had had cold baths and even worehad worn cologne while in prison. When Kaladin asksasked him why he locked himself up, Adolin said it didn't seem right that Kaladin was in there, especially after saving his life. When Kaladin apologizesapologized for ruining the plan, Adolin tellstold him that it was Elhokar who didhad ruined it, not him. He even believesbelieved Kaladin about Amaram unquestioningly, stating the man seemsseemed too perfect and iswas thus hiding something. When Shallan comescame over to them, she kisseskissed Adolin's cheek, much to his surprise, as Alethi arewere not so publicly affectionate. When she rhetorically asksasked why the moss iswas growing weird on a rock, he repliesreplied that it's was because of alcohol in an attempt at being funny. Shallan asksasked Adolin to slay the moss for her and he bemusedly doesdid so, cutting the top of the rock off with his Shardblade,. He then leavesleft Kaladin to watch over her as he goeswent to get something to drink. While he's was gone he letslet the darkeyed waterboys try on his Shardplate helmet. Later, when the carpenter destroysdestroyed the bridge, Adolin ran to try to stop him and grabbed his father but was unable to save Shallan or Kaladin, who fell into the chasms. sa2

When Adolin learnslearned that Shallan iswas alive, he rushesrushed to her apartments. Though he initiatesinitiated the hug, the first time he's had ever initiated any physical affection, Shallan iswas the one who initiatesinitiated the kiss. When Shallan asksasked where he'd been, he tellstold her he washad been delivering his father's ultimatum to finish the Vengeance Pact to the other Highprinces. Dalinar thought it would keep Adolin occupied while grieving over Shallan. Adolin promisespromised he'lld never let anything happen to Shallan again and she tellstold him that while she appreciatesappreciated his concern, butshe doesdid not want that from him. He grievesgrieved for a moment over the Ryshadium before charging back into the battle and commanding his troops. He discoversdiscovered that the Parshendi's lightning actsacted like nauralnatural lightning and willwould often miss targets by going into the ground. He also discoversdiscovered that their lightning doesdid not affect Shardplate. sa2

The Parshendi trytried to immobilize Adolin by lassoing him with ropes, but he managesmanaged to cut through them and fendfended the Parshendi off. The Parshendi arewere engaging Adolin in teams to keep him out of the battle where he'd be the most deadly. When Perel, the man he had placed as field commander, callscalled for the flank's retreat, Adolin guardsguarded it in case the Parshendi pursuepursued. Perel tellstold him neither side iswas making headway and that he iswas worried about the singing Parshendi reserves up against a rock formation in the middle of the plateau. Adolin cancould no longer feel the Thrill, which he passespassed off as just being tired. Adolin remembersremembered what Shallan said about the rock formations being hollow and devisesdevised a plan to go through the formation with a battalion. sa2

Adolin and a thousand men gowent through the crem encrusted building to the wall the Parshendi singers arewere hiding against. He cutscut two holes in the wall for his men to exit through,; the first one goingwent unnoticed because of all the chanting and rain, but the second was noticed. He chargescharged into the Parshendi and startsstarted cutting them down. He likenslikened it to killing sleeping men and reflectsreflected on how attacking ordinary soldiers with Shards was doing dirty work. Despite winning the plateau, the Parshendi's expressions of horror haunthaunted him as he cutscut them down, feeling nauseated. Though he's was caught unawares by Eshonai and her's attack, he mentally thanksthanked her for her arrival, glad to have an honest fight on his hands. sa2

Fighting Eshonai, Adolin sensessensed the Thrill in her and usesused this to his advantage in their duel, luring her to the edge of the plateau. Though Eshonai managesmanaged to break his vambrace, Adolin knocksknocked her off the edge of the plateau and down into the chasms. This gambit breaksbroke his helm and nearly topplestoppled him over the edge as well, but he iswas caught and saved by Drehy and Skar.

While jogging across the bridge to find out what was going on with the rest of the army, Adolin grabsgrabbed the arm of a man in a thick cloak whowhom he assumesassumed iswas delivering something and asksasked where his father iswas. Szeth throwsthrew a badly beaten Adolin through one of the tents, and Adolin landslanded near his father, most of his Plate broken or cracked. Adolin tries to stop him, but with so much of his Plate broken, he strugglesstruggled to get upstand. He watcheswatched his father and Szeth fight and eventually managesmanaged to stand. Drehy and Skar helphelped him remove his armor. Once it's was off, he runsran to save his father, who was kneltkneeling in defeat before Szeth, but. Roion getsgot there before him and iswas Lashed upwards to the sky by Szeth. Wearing no Shardplate, Adolin engagesengaged Szeth. Dalinar and Adolin both rushrushed Szeth, hoping to score a lucky blow, but Szeth fliesflew out of the way. Szeth managesmanaged to land a hand on Dalinar in the fight and LashesLashed him upwards into the storm. Crying, Adolin beginsbegan to rush Szeth, but the assassin pointspointed his Honorblade at Adolin and tellstold him that it iswas finished and that he iswas done. Adolin movesmoved to hit him, but Szeth parriesparried the blow, breaking Adolin's wrist. He hitshit him in the chest, knocking the air from Adolin's lungs, and sayssaid he cancould kill one more. Before Szeth cancould, however, Kaladin landslanded with Dalinar in his grasp, safe. sa2

Kaladin chaseschased after Szeth into the storm and Adolin, upon confirming Kaladin iswas one of the Knights Radiant, laughslaughed and exclaimsexclaimed that he knew there was something wrong with the man. === The True Desolation (1174-) ===
Exploring Urithiru
Adolin took charge of the expeditionexploration of Urithiru, creating maps of the city.sa2 Adolin and Shallan met, and Shallan said she willwould not let her status as a Radiant cause awkwardness between them. They kissed, and Adolin promised to stop being awkward if she stopped being irresistible. When he left, he informed her that Pattern hashad chosen her room and told the guards that no one iswas to disturb her.sa2

While exploring, Adolin reflected on his relationship with Shallan and how it hashad changed with the revelation that she was a Radiant, which hashad shaken his sense of self. Getting too far ahead of the rest of his party, Adolin investigated some voices he heard and stumbled across Sadeas with a scouting party of his own. Adolin remained hidden until the others have left and tried to sneak away, but his boot scraped the floor, drawing Sadeas's attention. As the two talked, Sadeas revealed his plan to undermine Dalinar by saying the Kholin'sKholins had contacted the Parshendi and the two had put on a convincing show at Narak. Sadeas didn't believe this, but it was the lie he'll would tell others.

Adolin asked Sadeas why he was the way he was, and Sadeas told Adolin that an army cannotcould not have two generals and; it had to be him or Dalinar who disappeared. Adolin said it didn't have to be that way, but Sadeas reiterated that it must and that he would take everything Dalinar had. Adolin finally snapedsnapped and attacked Sadeas. The two wrestlewrestled, and Adolin managed to stab Sadeas through the eye and into his brain, killing him. Adolin ditched Oathbringer, which materialized as Sadeas died, out the window and into one of the planters. He cut his bloody cuffs off and erased the chalk marks that indicated he had been in the vicinity. He returned to his scouting party and pretended he had been with them the whole time.sa2

Adolin supervised the workforce that was unloading goods at Urithiru. They used a huge room, four stories high, to become the new market place. His wrist was still hurting from the Battle of Narak. He was summoned by his father when Sadeas' body was discovered.sa3 Adolin kept quiet about his involvement and was put in charge of training the Alethi armies. Shortly after, he attended Dalinar's wedding.sa3 Adolin was very disturbed when a second murder happened in exactly the same way as Sadeas' a few days later. Dalinar then put him in charge of the investigation of both murders.sa3

The Kholin cavalry arewere housed on the ground floor of Urithiru with an outside field for Gallant, Dalinar's Ryshadium. Adolin went to visit the horse and talked with him, as Dalinar hadn't been giving hismuch attention to his mount. Adolin reminisced about the good times he had with Sureblood, as he was still mourning the loss of his own Ryshadium. At that moment, Renarin came by looking for Adolin. Renarin explained how he wanted to give his Shards back to Adolin, as the sword screamed when he touched it. The Kholin brothers talked about Renarin's emerging Radiant powers. Renarin expressed his fear that he would hurt someone, which Adolin dismissed. In response, Renarin healed Adolin's wrist.sa3

A little time later, Adolin visited Shallan in her room, bringing food. She was still in her underwear and had her safehand uncovered, as she was recovering from her 'scouting' party and had slept in. After some commotion, Shallan let Adolin into her room and formally introduced Pattern to him. They had a lengthy and flirty talk while Pattern acted as chaperone.sa3 They discussed the murders Adolin was set to investigate, and Adolin offered Shallan to teach herShallan how to use her Shardblade.sa3

At his next visit to Shallan, Adolin waited outside until he could enter. He quickly noticed the jug of Horneater white and wondered what Shallan had been up to. While they walked to Ialai Sadeasspeak to speakIalai Sadeas about the murders, Adolin advised Shallan to find a purpose for her 'honor' guards. It turned out that, Ialai had no useful information, but she pointed Adolin to the Kholin troops. She asked him to send a report of his findings to her own investigator, Meridas Amaram.sa2

Adolin attended a big conference with Dalinar, Kaladin, Elokhar, the highprinces, and other dignitaries. When Ialai entered and named Amaram the regent to the Sadeas princedom, Adolin got very angry. Dalinar sent Adolin away, and Shallan followed him. During the conversation that followed, Adolin revealed to Shallan that it was Kaladin who killed her brother Helaran.sa3

The Midnight Mother
When Shallan discovered where Re-Shephir was hiding in Urithiru, she had Pattern find Adolin to accompany her. Adolin gathered a group of Bridge Four soldiers, including his brother Renarin, and led them down into the tower. When they came to a locked metal door, Adolin used his Shardblade to cut the lock and findgrant entry to a library filled with decayed books. Adolin ordered his men to retreat when they found Re-Shephir, standing at the front with Renarin to fight her. Initially he tried to convince Shallan to run away, but he trusted her judgement when she claimed to understand the spren and wanted to fight it. Adolin led the charge against Re-Shephir trusting that Shallan could defeat her.sa3 After the battle, Adolin tried to convince Shallan to rest.sa3

Siege of Kholinar
Kaladin flew the small expedition to Kholinar, including Elhokar, Shallan and Adolin to Kholinar. Adolin supported Kaladin when he advised the king to approach the city with caution. The team landed outside the city and approachesapproached the city using lightwoven disguises. The Wall Guard was not letting anyone in, but the team used a moment of distraction to sneak in. Adolin leadled the team to his suggested hide out: his tailor's house.sa3 Adolin and Elhokar attended several parties to contact the remaining local lighteyes and gain the support of their private house guards. When Kaladin was infiltrating the Wall Guard, Adolin acted as his handler, signaling to Kaladin to continue undercover.sa3 During the next highstorm, Adolin, Shallan, and Kaladin sheltered in a wine-house where they planned their next moves. Afterwards, Shallan and Adolin shared an intimate moment, and he got to browse through her sketchbook.sa3

After all their reconnaissance, the group decided their only option iswas to storm the palace with the help of the Wall Guard and private house guards. While preparing for the assault, Adolin talked again to his sword about how he needed her, and how she used to be alive, and his intention to use her for something good thisthat day. Adolin, Azure, and Elhokar leadled the charge on the front steps of the palace and used their Shardblades to cut open the doors into the palace. When alerted by an officer, Adolin found and freed the remaining loyal Palace Guard troops, who were locked up. After they secured the eastern gallery, Adolin leadled the group that cleared the way for Shallan towards the Oathgate platform.sa3 After Ashertmarn fled, Adolin left Shallan to open the Oathgate, and went to the Sunwalk with Skar and Drehy to rescue Kaladin and Elhokar; they arrived after Elhokar's death, but were able to save Kaladin.sa3 As he returned to the Oathgate, he got a good look at Kholinar, realized that the city—his home—was lost, and ordered a retreat. ==== Trip through Shadesmar ====
Adolin, Shallan, Kaladin, Azure, Syl, Pattern, and the deadeye representing Adolin's sword found themselves in Shadesmar.sa3 Shallan used a lot of Stormlight to create makeshift platforms in the bead ocean to get the group to the land representing the river near Kholinar in the Physical Realm. Adolin felt useless, as he had no skills to help the group.sa3 The next morning, Adolin woke up and started a morning kata, which Kaladin and Azure both joined.sa3 They followed the peninsula to the lighthouse at the end, from where they caught a ship sailed by Reachers to Celebrant.sa3 Just before disembarking in Celebrant, Adolin had a conversation with Azure about duty, royalty, and Azure's view that sometimes the best way to do your duty is to let someone else carry it.sa3

The group split in Celebrant; Adolin went with Kaladin and Syl to change money and buy supplies. The group soon discovered that the city was under the control of the Fused. They narrowly escaped when Syl surrendered herself to a ship of honorspren.sa3 The honorspren sailed south-westsouthwest, letting the group move freely on deck exceptwith the exception of Syl, who was kept captive. During the trip, Adolin had a long talk with Shallan, and they both revealed some of their secrets; Adolin confessed to her that he was the one who had killed Sadeas, and Shallan talked about her problems with her other identities. Shortly thereafter, they spotedspotted eight Fused in pursuit of the ship.sa3 They were close to Longbrow's Straits, here a land area, with Thaylen City on the other side. Using the bead of a room, Adolin, Shallan, Kaladin, and their spren snuck into the bead ocean while the honorspren and Azure held off the Fused. The group had an exhausting hike across the land to get to the Thaylen City Oathgate, only to find it guarded.sa3sa3

The group attacked the Oathgate in an attempt to get back to the Physical Realm.sa3 Adolin lead Pattern, Syl, Maya, and twenty of Shallan's illusions to distract two of the guarding Fused. He acted randomly to blend in with the illusions, but one of the Fused spotted him anyway. Adolin fought the Fused and got rammed through by a lance to the stomach. He only survived because Maya suddenly attacked the Fused, allowing Adolin to flee.sa3 Dalinar then opened Honor's Perpendicularity, allowing Adolin, along with Shallan and Kaladin, to return to the Physical Realm.sa3

During the fight he heard Maya speak to him, telling him her name and her approval of his actions. Adolin stopped to rescue a boy in a building during the fight. Hrdalm found him and helped distract the thunderclast by taking hits with his Shardplate. The thunderclast nearly killed him, but he managed to summon Maya in seven heartbeats instead of the usual ten, saving his life. Renarin found Adolin, healed him again, and forced him to leave because he didn't have Plate, so; Adolin gave Maya to Hrdalm to temporarily to use instead.sa3 After the battle, he found Shallan to make sure she was all right.
