Upon his departure from Hearthstone, Kaladin pursued the Voidbringers. After two days, he arrived in the village of [[Hornhollow]]. There, the townspeople had gathered for a town meeting. Syl transformed herself into the shape of a Shardblade and he was welcomed by the crowd. A lighteyed man asked Kaladin if he'd rather rest and eat or attack the rogue parshmen. Kaladin ordered the man to take him to them.{{book ref|sa3|10}}

An ardent informs him that the parshmen, about fifty in number and presumably in warform, sought the grain out specifically. Two men were hurt during the attack, [[KhemKhen]] and another man. Kaladin then seeks out the citylord who tells him that his scouts know which direction the parshmen went, towards Kholinar. The citylord offers to have his men escort Kaladin, but he departs alone, saying they would only slow him down.{{book ref|sa3|10}}

====Traveling with the Parshmen====

Kaladin and Rock set Teft up in one of the barrack rooms, privately. They wrapped blankets around him and brought him some of Rock's stew. Teft apologized and promised to tell them if he started feeling the need again. He couldn't eat the stew just yet though, unable to keep anything down. They let him rest and Teft thought about how they were better friends than he deserved, growing into something grand while Teft stayed on the ground. Before the day was up, Teft was back to training bridgemen from other crews, able to function, but even as he went back to work, the realization that he wasn't going to get any more firemoss for a while hurt him more than anything. He realized he was going to have to go a few excruciating days of feeling like half a man, where all he wouldn't feel anything but his self-loathing and his shame. The thought of no help terrified Teft.{{book ref|sa3|41}}

===When the Dream Dies===

====Confessions with Skar====

Teft came over and sat beside Skar and offered him some of the food that Leyten brought, telling the lad to eat something. Skar reminded him that he wasn’t that much younger than him. Teft nodded, helping himself to the food. Skar confided that he was worried that he would never draw Stormlight and there would be no need for a lieutenant who has to walk everywhere. Teft tried to convince him there was nothing wrong with being on the support team. Skar argued that he waited forever to hold a spear and he’s good at fighting.{{book ref|sa3|46}}

Teft guessed that he was military but Skar admitted that the Blackcaps didn’t think much of his application, being a runt and all. He could afford armor costs, so he ended up being a rocksplitter. As Skar confessed to his past, he realized that they had all come to share things about their past and it was cathartic. Teft interrupted his thoughts and said that one would think their leader would be there by now, but he was acting more like a lightens every day. Skar warned him not to let Kaladin hear him say that.{{book ref|sa3|46}}

Teft snapped that he could say what he wanted, that he had things he could be doing if Kaladin wasn’t going to show. Skar gave him a concerned look and Teft promised him not that, that he hadn’t touched the stuff in days. Teft continued to argue that they all treated him differently and that the problem wasn’t him and the moss, but it was the world going crazy. Skar agreed and Teft studied him before asking how long the men had known about his problem. Skar lied to him that they hadn’t known long and nobody was really thinking about it. He knew the truth was that the men had known for a while and Teft’s behavior might have gotten him discharged or worse, assigned to bridge duty. Teft ended the conversation, reminding him they were talking about Skar’s glow when Kaladin appeared.{{book ref|sa3|46}}

====An Officer's Meeting====

Once they arrived at the training plateau, Kaladin pulled the officers together for a meeting where he confessed that he was worried that nobody practicing with Bridge Four had breathed Stormlight yet. Sigzil reminded him it had only been two weeks. Kaladin agreed, but said that Syl thinks several feel right, but she wouldn’t tell him who. He told the men that he asked General Khal to send more hopefuls to give them a better chance of finding squires. Kaladin admitted that maybe he should have told Khal not to include any lighteyes as it wouldn’t be right to have them in Bridge Four. Skar objected that Kaladin was now lightens as was Renarin. He added that anyone else who earned their own blades would also be lighteyed.{{book ref|sa3|46}}

Kaladin conceded and said the point was he didn’t have a lot of time before the trip with Elhokar and he wanted to push the recruits harder. Rock suggested they shove them off the edge of the plateau and see who can fly. Kaladin asked for serious suggestions and Teft offered to run them through formations. Kaladin agreed, but confessed that he wished he knew how the Radiants originally handled expansion, whether they did recruitment drives or just waited for those that drew spren. Teft pointed out that they wouldn’t be squires at that point, but rather full Radiants. Sigzil agreed, but they also don’t know if being a squire is required to become a full Radiant, that perhaps it comes down to one’s spren.{{book ref|sa3|46}}

Skar agreed uncomfortably, which caused them all to glance at him. He promised to punch the first person who said something placating. He looks to Rock and promises the stomach if he can’t reach it. Rock joked that he could hit his face if he jumped, then he might be as tall as a regular person. Kaladin interrupted them and told Teft to run the potential recruits through formations. He told him to have the other men watch the sky as he was worried and confused by the Fused still harrying them. Skar shared a glance with Sigzil who shrugged as they didn’t know about things like strategy and battlefield tactics.{{book ref|sa3|46}}

==Rock==

Kaladin told Rock to go walk with his family, that the crew could handle the bridge today. Rock resisted, saying it would be a privilege to carry the bridge one last time, for his family. Kaladin questioned the one last time and Rock explained that soon they would be taking to the skies and would no longer have to carry the bridge. The rest of Bridge Four looked subdued, knowing this was true, but Rock told them not to be sad. There was great stew waiting and they could march not towards death, but towards food and good songs. The solemn group of men took up the bridge respectfully with Kaladin taking his place in front as they set out on one final run.{{book ref|sa3|37}}

==Lyn==

===Finding Oathbringer===

Lyn ran to find Dalinar as he wandered the halls, explaining that Bridge Four needed him. Lyn led him to the same section of the tower where Sadeas had been murdered. She led him to a balcony where Leyten and Peet waited.{{book ref|sa3|28}}

===Encounter with the Unmade Re-Shephir===

Lyn traveled with the rest of Bridge Four and Adolin to help Shallan after she chases the mysterious spren into a tunnel. During the discussion, Lyn piped in to say they had scouted near this spot at least a dozen times. After some discussion, Adolin delegated roles to Bridge Four before they entered the tunnel. He asked Lyn to draw maps so they would know the exact line of retreat should it become necessary. Some discussion later and with the marching orders finally set, the bridgemen proceeded along with Shallan and Adolin into the tunnel. After a lengthy walk, they finally reached the bottom of the shaft, causing several of the bridgemen to sigh.{{book ref|sa3|29}}

Upon reaching the bottom, they entered a hall with bright mosaic tiles and gorgeous intricate pictures of the Heralds made of thousands of tiles adorning the ceiling. The walls contained depictions of the Almighty in his traditional form as well as a woman in the shape of a tree, hands spreading toward the sky and becoming branches. There were murals of shapes that depicted ten kinds of spren, possibly one for each order. Adolin sent a vanguard of bridgemen ahead and they soon returned.{{book ref|sa3|29}}

At their return, Lyn relayed that there were metal doors ahead, one on each side. The group moved towards the doors and the bridgemen tried to open then with no success. Drehy wiped his brow and said they were locked. Adolin said he had a key, raising his Shardblade. Shallan objected, but Adolin reminded her they were chasing a murderer. Shallan waved all the bridgemen back while Adolin rammed his blade into the door. Teft tried the door and was able to shove it open.{{book ref|sa3|29}}

The bridgemen ducked in first, spears in hand, taking point. Once they secured the room, an old library, Adolin led them to secure the second room. While they searched the rooms, Lyn followed Renarin down the corridor. She called for Adolin, Shallan, and the rest of Bridge Four. In front of Renarin, a large mass reflected the light like glistening tar. Renarin stumbled, crying they can't fight this. Seeing this, the bridgemen put themselves in front of Shallan, between her and Renarin. Teft barked orders to get the men in formation in two lines. Hearing the commotion, Adolin burst out of the second library room, joining the bridgemen.{{book ref|sa3|29}}

The darkness seeped down the hall towards them, coating everything, becoming figures and creatures that rippled into existence. Renarin whispered that one of the Unmade was here, Re-Shephir, the Midnight Mother. Adolin shouted for Shallan and the men to run back up the hall as he charged the figures. Shallan noticed the creatures looked like them, particularly one that looked like Teft, one like Lopen, and two with the appearance of Shardplate.{{book ref|sa3|29}}

Teft ordered the men to make a careful retreat, not allowing themselves to get boxed in. Renarin ignored Teft's orders, frozen until Adolin grabbed his arm and Teft shouted at him again. He fell in line and they began to retreat in line. Suddenly, the enemy moved causing the bridgemen to curse and turn their spears as the main mass of darkness swept up the sides of the corridor, covering the murals. The creatures surrounded Bridge Four who now formed a circle to keep from being attacked from the rear. The creatures thrust spears at the bridgemen, wounding one now and again. Lyn and Lopen bandaged the injured while Renarin used Stormlight to heal them so they could return to the line.{{book ref|sa3|29}}

Shallan noticed the Unmade was imitating them and began to talk to it while the bridgemen continued to fight off the midnight creatures. Shallan breathed in Stormlight to create her own radiant force that spread out to surround and protect the bridgemen. The men of Bridge Four were able to momentarily relax while Adolin asked Shallan whether now would be the time to fight or retreat. They decided to fight and Adolin asked if the bridgemen were ready to give it another go. Lopen replied that they would last longer than him, even with his fancy armor.{{book ref|sa3|29}}

Shallan asked Adolin for them to clear a path close enough for her to touch the Unmade. Adolin asked Renarin to guard his back and Bridge Four shouted, rushing in behind him forming a spear line on either side of Shallan. As the bridgemen along with Adolin and Renarin continued to struggle to hold back the midnight creatures, Shallan reached out with her safehand and touched the Unmade.{{book ref|sa3|29}}

Shallan dropped backward into the room to find Renarin healing a bridgemen who ad been hurt. She quickly asked Adolin what happened to the Unmade. He said it fled like smoke farther down into the mountains. Eth asked if they should chase it. Shallan, feeling the change in the tower, told them not to chase it. She told him they could post guards, but she didn't think it would return. Teft agreed that guards sounded like a very good idea. She frowned at his comment but followed his gaze to what the Re-Shephir had been hiding - thousands upon thousands of cut gemstones.{{book ref|sa3|30}}

===Becoming Windrunners===

====Recruitment====

Lyn ran down the hallway towards the pair and she saluted Kaladin, saying he was just the man she was looking for. She informed him that the Quartermaster approved his unusual request. She fell into step with Sigzil and just shrugged, not knowing what the request was. Kaladin eyed Lyn and asked if she was the one helping his men, even going so far as the make excuses to see them and not being afraid of the 'Lost Radiants.' Lyn confessed that based on what she had seen on the battlefield, she would rather bet on his side than bet on the opposition. Kaladin nodded and asked her if she would like to join the Windrunners. Lyn stopped in place, her jaw dropping and then agreeing on the spot. Kaladin asked if Sigzil could get the accounts and ledgers for her and explained she could also help the men write letters to their families. He also suggested that they should probably write a history of Bridge Four.{{book ref|sa3|35}}

Lyn deflated when she realized Kaladin meant for her to join as a scribe. She informed him that she didn't join the scouts to sit around looking at ledgers. She decided she would have to decline if that's what he was offering. Seeing her shoulders fall, Sigzil was surprised that he found he wanted to punch his captain, not hard, just a "wake up" punch. He hadn't felt that way since Kaladin first woke him that first morning in Sadeas' warcamp. Understanding, Kaladin extended an invitation to try out for the Windrunners. He admitted he wasn't sure what the test would be yet, but for her to speak with her superior for clearance to change battalions. She bounded off excited.{{book ref|sa3|35}}

===When the Dream Dies===

====Running Tests====

Skar ran up the ramps of Urithiru with his full marching pack and gear, with his spear in his hand. He finally reached the control building, sweating and breathing hard. The rest of Bridge Four waited, with some glowing with Stormlight. After two weeks of practice, Skar was still the only one who hadn’t figured out how to draw it in, with the exception of Dabbid and Rlain.{{book ref|sa3|46}}

Sigzil checked the time on a small device allocated to them by Navani. He told Skar he was just under ten minutes. Skar had ran over a mile from the center of the market, to the plateau, then up the ramp. He knew he was pushing himself too hard. Skar asked how long it took Drehy, who was assisted by Stormlight. Sigzil glanced at Drehy, who still glowed with residual Stormlight, and replied under six minutes.{{book ref|sa3|46}}

Skar groaned and sat down, but Sigzil tried to reassure Skar that the baseline was equally important as they needed to know a normal man’s abilities to be able to make comparisons. Skar flopped backward and watched Lopen walk on the wall. Skar continued to lie on the ground while the others chatted and waited for Kaladin to transport them to the Shattered Plains.{{book ref|sa3|46}}

====Confessions with Teft====

Teft came over and sat beside Skar and offered him some of the food that Leyten brought, telling the lad to eat something. Skar reminded him that he wasn’t that much younger than him. Teft ended the conversation, reminding him they were talking about Skar’s glow when Kaladin appeared.{{book ref|sa3|46}}

====Walking to Narak====

As they walked through the city of Narak, Skar took in the artwork and glanced over to Rlain who was walking with his spear and wondered if Rlain would rather be painting than fighting. They walked passed squads of men who were practicing running bridges and Skar smiled as he realized it was the Blackcaps turn today. He wondered if any of them would recognize tham since the only way he could get them to take him seriously was his theft of the quartermaster’s armor. Skar thought they would praise his ingenuity but instead it earned him his slave brand. He touched his brand, remembering that he was the only one of Bridge Four whose brand was still visible aside from Kaladin himself.{{book ref|sa3|46}}

Kaladin brought with him roughly thirty scouts to practice drawing Stormlight, including Lopen’s cousins, some scouts, and men from the old Cobalt Guard. All there, Kaladin activated the oathgate, transferring them to Narak. Kaladin and the group were met by Ristina and a group of merchants who swapped places with the bridgemen and other trainees. Kaladin tells her to remind the merchants that the Knights Radiant are not doormen and they will have to get accustomed to waiting unless they want to swear the oaths themselves. Ristina smirked and and wrote it down, as if to pass along exactly what he said.{{book ref|sa3|46}}

Skar shared a glance with Sigzil who shrugged as they didn’t know about things like strategy and battlefield tactics.{{book ref|sa3|46}}

====Another Chance, Another Way====

They broke and Teft jogged off to train the recruits. Kaladin set Bridge Four to watch the skies and practice their flying. Skar observed the recruits doing formations alongside Kaladin. As Kaladin watched, he asked Skar how important formations might be going forward and should they change them when it comes to flying. Skar didn’t answer and instead went to get some water, getting some ribbing from the others. As he sipped Rock’s new refreshment, tea, he worried about whether the new recruits would take his place in Bridge Four. He hated feeling sorry for himself, so he tossed his cup aside and fished out some gemstones from his pocket.{{book ref|sa3|46}}

As he did, he spotted Lyn nearby and he could sense the frustration in her posture. He shouldered his spear and joined her and asked why she wasn’t joining in. Lyn confessed she didn’t know the formations as she’d never done drills. She sighed and asked Skar if Kaladin had went to get more recruits because she failed. Skar told her not to be stupid, that she wasn’t being forced out, but rather Kaladin wanted to have as many potential recruits as possible. Lyn admitted that they are finally in a new world where rank and eye color didn’t matter and she just wanted to be a part of it. She realized that Skar shared her same look and apologized that it must be worst for him. He shrugged and asked her if she had ever heard the story of how Kaladin drew in Stormlight.{{book ref|sa3|46}}

She asked if he meant what Teft said and he said no. She asked if he meant the healing and Skar once again said no. He held up the gemstone and said that it was on a bridge run. He recalled how they were charging a lot of Parshendi and most of the first row had been dropped except for Kaladin. Skar admitted that exposed him, who was right beside Kaladin. He told her that in those days, you didn’t have good odds, running near the front. He remembered how the arrows were coming right at him and then the arrows moved, swerving towards Kaladin. Skar told Lyn that’s the first time he knew something special was happening and back then, Kaladin didn’t even know he was doing it.{{book ref|sa3|46}}

Skar said that maybe that meant they were just trying to hard. Lyn said it didn’t make sense, that you had to suck it in. Skar admitted that he didn’t really know what it meant either. Skar recalled how it was easier for Kaladin when he didn’t stress it. She wanted to string them all up for not explaining it better, but she focused on the gemstone instead, trying to breathe in Stormlight for a solid ten minutes. She began to complain again about being a woman and Skar stopped her.{{book ref|sa3|46}}

He went on to ask her if she wanted to be a Windrunner and why. She said that she wanted to soar. Skar told her that wasn’t good enough. Kaladin wasn’t thinking about being left out or how great it would be to fly, but rather saving the others. He asked her again why she wanted to be a Windrunner. She admitted that she just wanted to help, not waiting for the enemy to come to them. Skar assured her that she had a chance then, but she had to seize it or leave and give up. He pressed the gemstone into her hand, saying that as long as she kept trying, there was a chance. If she gave up, then the dream died.{{book ref|sa3|46}}

Lyn closed her eyes and breathed in, drawing in Stormlight for the first time. She yelped in surprise and opened her hand to find the gemstone dun. She asked Skar what he did and he told her nothing, fighting his own jealousy. He then realized that maybe his lot was simply helping the others become Radiants. A trainer of sorts. Teft saw Lyn glowing and started cursing in a good way. Teft grabbed her by the arm and escorted her over to see Kaladin.{{book ref|sa3|46}}

====A New Dream====

Skar took in a long satisfied breath and he realized he could live with helping two others, including Rock. Rock walked over and joined Skar. Skar took a drink and and asked him what the foul tasting stuff was. Rock proudly claimed it was an old Horneater recipe. Skar leaned against the table and watched Lyn’s enthusiasm as her squad of scouts ran up to her. Skar felt good about what he’d done and told Rock that he was going to have to get used to smelly Horneaters since it looked like he’d join the support staff.{{book ref|sa3|46}}

Rock asked if Skar really thought he’d ever let him near his cook pot. Skar admitted that he might not ever fly and that he needed to come to terms with that fact. Rock asked him if the fact that he was glowing with Stormlight right now was not a consideration at all. Skar stopped and looked at his hand, seeing tiny wisps of Stormlight curling off it. He dropped the cup and dug out the dun spheres from his pocket. He looked to Rock and grinned. Rock told him that he could have Skar was dishes, but since he did just throw a cup on the ground. Skar left him mid-sentence as he ran off to join the others whooping with excitement.{{book ref|sa3|46}}

===MeetingJoining the Voidbringers===

====Meeting====

Moash sat and ate some stew by the fire while he listened to Graves and Febrth argue over which direction to go. Graves wanted to follow the map, while Febrth wanted to follow the Passions. Grave argued with him saying he was supposed to have given up such superstitions to follow the Diagram now. Moash continued to eat the "stew," but admitted that he hated it when any of them cooked as no one could cook like Rock. Done eating, Moash dropped his bowl, spilling the stew, grabbed his coat, and walked away from the pair. Moash kicked a rock and stubbed his toe, cursing and looking over his shoulder as the argument ended.{{book ref|sa3|43}}

{{sidequote|Which I'll do, when we're not crawling across winter's own frozen backside.|Moash to Graves about his coat {{book ref|sa3|4143}}|right|250px}}

Graves joined Moash, who asked how lost they were. Graves told him they weren't lost at all, if Febrth would look at the map. Graves glanced at Moash's coat, telling him he was supposed to get rid of it. Moash agreed, once they weren't stuck in wintery conditions. Graves conceded and said he should at least get rid of the patch so it doesn't give them away. Moash felt at the patch, bringing back memories. His skin went clammy as he cut the stitches on the Bridge Four patch. While the patch was easy to remove, he remembered the tattoo on his arm that he had gotten with the others that would be much more difficult to remove. Moash looked at it one last time, but wasn't able to bring himself to throw it away.{{book ref|sa3|43}}
The creature came for him and he lashed out, driving her back. However, she tried again, almost gliding in her movement towards him. Moash struggled to hit her again, realizing how clunky his blade was. He twisted to the side as she struck again, this time giving Moash a long cut on his arm. The other Voidbringers continued to pilfer through the wagon, one getting excited as it found the Shardplate. At that moment, a spear rolled out of the wagon and he dismissed his Shardblade, diving for the spear. He could almost hear Kaladin's voice as he took up the spear and stood his ground as the Voidbringer came for him. He thrust the spear and took the Voidbringer down much to her surprise. Moash went to stab through her chest, but she didn't fall. However, he was able to block her next attack.{{book ref|sa3|43}}

{{sidequote|Bridge Four, you bastards.|Moash to the Voidbringers {{book ref|sa3|4143}}|left|250px}}

The Voidbringer reached and touched Moash's chest, trying to spill her dark light into him. Fortunately, Kaladin had prepared him for this too. He seized the Voidbringer and he threw her off balance. He Lashed him, growing stronger and got his knife, driving it into her chest. Her body fell limp and and the force keeping him in the air ran out. They both fell to the crowd, her body cushioning his fall. He turned toward the other three stunned Voidbringers and said they could probably kill him, but he was at least taking one of them with him. The woman in the center looked to Moash and said he had passion. She then gave him a choice, die here or accept defeat and give up his weapons.{{book ref|sa3|43}}

With a shrug, he tossed his spear aside and summoned his Blade. He pressed his hand to the gemstone and willed the bond to break, throwing the sword to the ground. One of the Voidbringers took it and another flew off, leaving Moash confused. A short time later, six more returned and they seized the Shardplate bundles and then picked up Moash and hauled him into the air.{{book ref|sa3|43}}

====Revolar====

The Voidbringers carried Moash to the city of Revolar, where they dropped him outside the city and shoved him towards a group of lesser parshmen. Arms aching from being carried, Moash stretched and looked around the city. He noticed the city had been taken over completely by the Voidbringers who left, handing him over to the parshmen. He waited until they herded him and others towards one of the large storm bunkers outside the city. The parshwoman told the group not to fight or run, or they would be beaten or killed, calling them the slaves now. The parshmen searched the belongings of the humans, allowing Moash to pass as he didn't having anything on him of value.{{book ref|sa3|45}}

He recalled how he'd always been met with hostility no matter where he went, except for Bridge Four. Bridge Four had been special and he failed that test. As he looked around, he realized Graves had been right. This is who he really was. The parshmen shouted the jobs that needed tending to for the day. Moash frowned and asked a man next two him why they offered work since they were supposed to be slaves. The man told Moash that if you don't work, you don't eat, so there really wasn't much of a choice. As the man volunteered for a job, Moash walked around, unsettled as he did with the parshmen's perfect Alethi.{{book ref|sa3|45}}

He walked around the stations where jobs were being offered, stopping at the third one recognizing the work and clothes to be that of caravaneers. He asked one of the caravaneers if Guff was around and the young man pointed him out, but said there weren't any jobs available. Another told him not to draw too much attention to himself or they would slap a harness on him.{{book ref|sa3|45}}

{{sidequote|You wouldn't believe me if I told you.|Moash to Guff about what brought him to Revolar {{book ref|sa3|45}}|right|250px}}

Despite what they said, he headed over to where Guff stood. He was surprised to see Moash, knowing he had been off to the Shattered Plains. He figured the caravan was all dead, no one would have bet on him returning. Moash said that was a wise bet. Guff asked him what he needed and Moash answered that he just needed to be who he once was. Guff said that didn't make any sense and Moash explained that they tried to break him, they did, but then he was made a new man again and he threw it all away. He asked Guff why they must always do that, take something precious and throw it away. Guff asked him if he was a soldier and Moash showed him his patchless uniform coat.{{book ref|sa3|45}}

Guff pulled him to the side and led him to another bunker. The guard told him he was supposed to be on duty, but Guff replied he was and he found a soldier. The guard turned his focus to Moash and asked if he was a deserter. Moash nodded, knowing it was true in more ways than one. Moash recognized the man he was led to, Highlord Paladar, Vamah's kinsman and regent, known for his greed and corruption. Paladar asked Moash if he knew of any news from the Shattered Plains. The guards hauled him out and they threw him into the street. There, he volunteered for the most difficult job they had - pulling wagons of supplies for the Voidbringer army.{{book ref|sa3|45}}
