Kimmalyn (Callsign: Quirk) is a cadet in DDF Flight School.[1] Skyward six.[2] She forgets her flight number the first time Skyward Flight is called into duty.[3]

[1] Kimmalyn's great grandmother was the assistant quartermaster of the Antioch.

Appearance and Personality

[1] Kimmalyn is a girl around Spensa's age, with tan-brown skin and long, curly black hair, who is taller than Spensa. She has a faint accent that Spensa doesn't recognise. She is touchy feely. She comes across as very genuine. She enjoys small pleasures like the sound of water in a fountain. She is a cheerful and friendly person.

[4] She is perky and friendly. She is quick to follow orders from someone who gives off the impression of authority. She salutes using a lot of energy - using both hands and standing on her toes. She may not be familiar with correct military procedure, or she may be being silly, though her reaction to Jorgen's criticism points to her being genuine, albeit, overexcited with her saluting She frequently uses the phrase 'bless your stars', which is likely based off the Southern US saying 'bless your heart'. '[Bless your stars]' seems to have a variety of meaning. (From Wiki page, Bless your heart) It can be used as a sincere expression of sympathy or genuine concern. It can be used as a precursor to an insult to soften the blow. It is also sometimes used to mean "you are dumb or otherwise impaired, but you can't help it" by individuals who wish to "be sweet” and do not wish to "act ugly".

She likes to quote someone called the Saint, though no one else knows who that is. It is later revealed that most of the Saint's "sayings" actually originated with Kimmalyn[Falta cita]. Kimmalyn justifies a majority of her actions or choices with sayings by the Saint.[5] Spensa suggested that Kimmalyn use the callsign Saint, which she vehemently rejected.[2] She settles on Quick,[2] however, after multiple members misremember her callsign to be Quirk she changes her callsign.[3][6]

She is a genuinely kind person who considers others comfort as much as her own and will willingly decrease her comfort of living to help increase another's, so that they do not have to carry discomfort themselves.[6] She is perceptive about her friends and will specifically check in with them if something seems to be wrong and help where she can (giving food to Spensa when Cobb tells Kimmalyn that Spensa forgot lunch).[7]

She is aware of her skill with shooting,[8] however, either not used to praise or just unsure as to how to accept it.[6]

She occasionally likes to insult people without their being aware they have been insulted[Falta cita].

Abilities

Kimmalyn is a poor flyer, but an expert markswoman, specializing in sniping moving Krell ships from a distance that would normally be impossible.[6] She has trained on the smaller AA guns which lends itself well to firing the destructors in starfighters.[6] She is an impressive shot and was specifically encouraged by DDF recruiters the test because of her weaponry abilities.[6] She is far more skilful than most DDF pilots when using destructors as she is trained to hit moving targets, with most only using the guns for long range against stationary units.[8]

She crashed her ship when she first tried to launch it, surprised she had been able to get off the ground, and subsequently crashed back to the ground.[2] She was a bit embarrassed by her attempt.[2] The first time she is put in a dogfight simulator, she is destroyed almost immediately.[8]

History

Kimmalyn is from Bountiful Cavern. Her father was a gunner, and gave Kimmalyn training on the smaller AA guns while she grew up.[6] Part of her father's training involve a mushroom that resembled a squirrel.[8] She did not plan to take the entrance exam for Flight School but was approached by DDF recruiters who wanted to see a demonstration of her weaponry skills.[6] Once seeing her abilities they encouraged her to apply for the DDF and sit the entrance exam.[6]

She offered to switch sleeping arrangements with Spensa every second night so that Spensa did not deal with sleeping on a cot.[6]

Her callsign was originally Quick, but Cobb changed it to Quirk for her personality.

During the light-lance ring game Kimmalyn crashed on the first round, on the fourth ring, being the second person to lose out after Bim.[9]

During the battle, Kimmalyn attempts to help Morningtide by sniping the Krell that were chasing her, however, is ultimately too late. Doing so left her exposed to Krell attack with no wingmate nearby. Although Spensa initially wanted to go and help her, Jorgen ordered her to help Bim, going to help Kimmalyn himself.[5]

After the battle where Hurl died, Kimmalyn quit the DDF, blaming her poor flying skills for Hurl's death.

== History -- [1] Kimmalyn and Spensa meet at the top of the public elevators on the first day of flight school and travel to class. They stopped at a fountain and Kimmalyn

[4] When Jorgen starts ordering the cadets around before their first class, Kimmalyn follows his orders and salutes him with both hands while on her tippy toes.

Relationships

Kimmalyn takes Spensa in stride from the get go and is not put out by her strong personality.[1] When Jorgen critisizes Kimmalyn shortly after Spensa meets the girl, she feels immediately protective of her.[4] Spensa was not sure what she thought of Kimmalyn's callsign and considered talking with her about it, though it is unclear if she ever did.[6] Kimmalyn sees no issue with Spensa's actions against Jorgen in the light-lance game, praising her for her conduct.[9] Kimmalyn is aware of who Spensa's father and has heard the stories about him.[9] Although she is, at first, shocked to find out Spensa's parentage, she does not treat Spensa differently after the revelation, nor does she shy away from the topic or Spensa's tendency towards anger.[10] She is impressed by Spensa's ability to stand up against the rumors.[10]

She picks up the use of Jerkface as Jorgen's callsign quickly after Spensa suggests it, also using it as an insult to him.[3] == Quotes
