A year later, Taravangian distancesdistanced himself from Karbranth and his fellow Diagram members in preparation of being contacted by Odium, who commandscommanded him to have his forces betray Dalinar's on their campaign in [[Emul]]. As Taravangian expectsexpected, the betrayal is swiftly dealt with and Dalinar has him arrested and imprisoned.

Dalinar, wishing to see the good in Taravangian, doesdid not immediately execute him, instead keeping him prisoner in a well-furnished home where Taravangian's requests arewere cared for. During this time, Taravangian's mental state deterioratesdeteriorated, and he spendsspent more days in his cognitively impaired, compassionate state. He iswas visited by Szeth and Renarin, but iswas too slow to carry on a conversation, and failsbelieved that he failed at his plan of manipulating Szeth. Dalinar eventually declaresdeclared that he willwas not to be executed, and instead sentencessentenced him to lifelong imprisonment so that he cancould prove to Taravangian that humanshuman cancoalition was capable of defeatdefeating Odium.

Szeth, disapproving of Dalinar's decision, entersentered Taravangian's home and murdersmurdered him. Upon entering the cognitive[[Cognitive realmRealm]], in the time between death and entering Thethe [[Beyond]], Taravangian iswas confronted by Odium. Still next to Szeth in the physical realm, Taravangian reachesreached the cognitive manifestation of [[Nightblood]] and usesused the weapon to destroy [[Rayse]], the vessel of Odium, due to Odium being in a weakened state from a conflict between vessel and shard. Taravangian takestook up the shard of Odium and AscendsAscended, then conversesconversed with [[Cultivation]].

As the vessel of Odium, he confontsconfonted [[Hoid]], who is expectingexpected to meet Rayse. Hoid noticesnoticed that something iswas amiss, and attemptsattempted to play it off so as not to make Taravangian suspicious. He seessaw through it, however, and wipeswiped Hoid's short-term memory, then replaysreplayed the same conversation with him, slightly altering his dialogue so as not to set Hoid off.

It is unclear whether killing Rayse with Nightblood and Ascending was part of Taravangian's original plan with the [[Diagram]], or if it was the plan he worked on while mentally impaired in prison. Taravangian intends to expand Odium's influence throughout the cosmere after his and Dalinar's contest of champions is settled, regardless of the outcome.
