Las hojas secas de ruinaoscura son venenosas. Su ingesta provoca parálisis, lo que a su vez impide que la víctima pueda respirar.{{book ref|sa2|48}} Las víctimas de envenenamiento por ruinaoscura presentan la piel oscurecida.{{book ref|sa3.5|10}} Es difícil obtener reuinaoscura al máximo de su potencial. Para ello, primero hay que dejar secar las hojas, para luego convertirlas en goma de mascar.{{book ref|sa4|7}} Se dice que las hojas secas se vuelven más potentes cuanto más las conservas.{{book ref|sa2|48}} Sin embargo, ingerir esta pasta de ruinaoscura no mata tan rápido como inyectar la esencia directamente en el torrente sanguíneo.{{book ref|sa4|7}}

During his time in Tvlakv's slave caravan, Kaladin managed to find a blackbane plant and hid a few leaves in a makeshift belt. One night he had taken them out to contemplate what he planned to do with them thinking of either trying to poison Tvlakv or committing suicide. He ended up accidentally crushing and subsequently losing them in his anger over Tvlakv's execution of a sick slave. [[Sylphrena|Syl]] was curious about the leaves but Kaladin was reluctant to tell her anything{{book ref|sa1|2}}. Later, Syl tracks down a blackbane leaf for Kaladin in a misguided attempt to cheer him. She gets back with it as Kaladin is getting ready to give up and jump into the [[Honor Chasm]]. She was unaware that blackbane is poisonous, but had noticed that Kaladin seemed to become depressed after losing the leaves. She hoped that having a new one would cheer him up and renew his desire to fight.{{book ref|sa1|11}} Thanks to this kind (though misguided) action on Syl's part, Kaladin decides against jumping and returns to [[Bridge Four]] with renewed purpose.
 
[[Wikim Davar|Wikim]] gave [[Shallan]] the bag of dried blackbane that he had been carrying for over a year, to indicate that he no longer wanted to kill himself due to her compassion in directing his study.{{book ref|sa2|48}} She eventually used it in an attempt to kill her father [[Lin Davar|Lin]] after he killed his wife [[Malise Gevelmar]].{{book ref|sa2|73}}

Una noche las sacó para reflexionar sobre lo que planeaba hacer con ellas, barajando tanto envenenar a Tvlakv o suicidarse. Terminó aplastando las hojas accidentalmente y perdiéndolas cuando Tvlakv ejecutó a un esclavo enfermo. [[Sylphrena|Syl]] sentía curiosidad por las hojas, pero Kaladin se mostraba reacio a contarle nada.{{book ref|sa1|2}} Más adelante, Syl localizó una hojas de ruinaoscura para Kaladin en un intento equivocado de animarlo.
