As they fly into space, they find a huge number of enemy fighters, including fifty piloted ships. FM and the rest of Nightmare flight fly out to meet the Krell, engaging multiple ships at once. In the middle of the flight, Nose calls over the intercom and relays an order from Admiral Cobb to turn off all communications immediately and to engage in evasive maneuvers. Admiral Cobb arrives, and relays information from Spensa, saying that the slugs are hyperdrives. He assigns Jorgen and Rig the task of experimenting on them and figuring out how to use them, and FM volunteers to join in their efforts. After Cobb leaves, they discuss how the slugs are escaping from their crates, and FM theorizes that the slugs are hyperjumping. FM asks what she should do to help, and Jorgen assigns her the task of finding and bringing back the taynix that escape from their crates.

;Plot Summary
FM is told to come to the medical bay early the next morning, she and meets Jorgen there. She learns that Alanik’s wounds have mostly healed, and that the medical team is about to wake her up. They have been assigned to talk to her first, since Jorgen is a cytonic and FM is better with people. Alanik wakes, and FM and Jorgen greet her, using the translator pin to speak in her language. Alanik asks where Spensa is, and FM explains what happened. Alanik asks where she is and how the humans have survived, and FM answers her questions. Alanik doesn’t know how much time as passed, and is horrified to find that she’s been in a coma for over two weeks. Jorgen asks her to teach him how to use his cytonic abilities. When FM mentions that they have a communication from a faction in the SuiperioritySuperiority, Alanik vehemently warns them not to trust them.
Just as FM begins to make progress and get Alanik to start and trust her, Jeshua and Cobb enter the room, Jeshua demanding answers from Alanik. Jeshua acts forceful and blunt, saying that they will keep Alanik captive until she gives them the desired information. Jorgen suddenly cries out, stumbling backwards, and Alanik teleports away. Jorgen says that Alanik spoke in his mind, saying that she didn’t trust them.

When he tells FM that she can get back to watching the slugs, FM is annoyed and asks what his problem is and why he never speaks to her. Rig says that he doesn’t dislike her, and FM realizes that he’s been quiet around her because he likes her. FM is shocked and embarrassed, and they awkwardly return to finding the communicator. When FM lifts a heavy box, Rig says that Nedd would’ve been able to lift it, and FM mentions that she isn’t interested in Nedd. They find the FTL communicator, a metal box like the one in M-Bot’s ship, and they realize that they’re supposed to put a slug in it to make it work.

Chapter 8
;Characters
FM, Rig, and Jorgen sit in the engineering bay with Fine, discussing the FTL communication box. Through process of elimination, they guess that the purple and orange taynix are used for FTL communication. They discuss how to make it work, and Rig suggests that maybe they use a holographic projector to project an image onto the inside of the box. Jorgen details what he had been thinking about when Boomslug exploded, and they theorize that maybe thinking about the delvers in the nowhere scares the taynix into action. To test the theory, Jorgen picks up Gill and thinks about the delvers, and Gill teleports away but leaves Jorgen standing there. They try it using Rig’s box, but Gill doesn’t teleport. They try it with Happy instead, with Jorgen holding the box and Happy inside. Both Jorgen and Happy disappear, and they teleport into a cubby on the other side of the room. Jorgen is squeezed into the tight space, and is annoyed when the others find it funny. Jorgen decides that despite the difficulties, they should try it out with a ship.

FM and Jorgen are in a two-seat fighter, with a box of the yellow taynix bolted to the floor of the cockpit. The rest of Skyward flight is there in case things go wrong, and FM and Jorgen discuss Jeshua and the General Assembly while they get in position. FM plays some music as Jorgen concentrates on the taynix, and they suddenly teleport into the debris belt. They are forced to dodge several pieces of debris as the rest of Skyward Flight tries to get to them. Jorgen focuses on the place he wants to go, teleporting them out of the way of two giant colliding pieces of debris. Jorgen tells FM that he thinks the Superiority heard him that last time, and that they likely know he’s teleporting. Moments later, Cobb comes over the radio, saying that the Superiority is moving their ships into position, and that their biggest battleship has planetary weapons for bombardment. They realize that since the Superiority knows they could potentially escape using Jorgen’s abilities, they’ve decided to destroy Detritus once and for all.

;Characters
When FM arrives at Platform Prime, the place is in chaos as people scramble for fighters. Rig is told to go with FM in her Dulo, which has been equipped with another box to put the taynix in. Jorgen tells them that the plan is to use the taynix to launch a suprise attack on the battleship’s planetary cannon. Skyward Flight takes off and heads towards where the Krell wait, and FM and Rig begin to listen to music as they engage the Krell.

The battleship’s cannon begins firing at the outer platforms, sending debris everywhere. Cobb orders all pilots to retreat to Platform Prime. A few armed ships attack FM and Rig, and she defends herself until members of Skyward Flight come to help her. Command manages to get the planetary shield up, which then manages to hold against the cannon. FM and Skyward Flight can’t get through the shield, and are trapped outside. Cobb sends them orders to hide until they can figure something out.

;Plot Summary
Chapter 15
Jorgen’s hyperjump lands them only a few kilometers away from Platform Prime, and they make it back without incident. Jorgen goes to be debriefed and Rig goes to meet with the Engineering Corps, leaving FM to take care of the slugs. She puts the slugs in their crates, and Rig informs her that they’re going to try using Fine to power the FTL communication device. As they walk, Rig and FM discuss what they fear most, and FM admits that she’s afraid of dying in battle and ceasing to exist. They discuss their days in flight school as well as the taynix, and the topic turns to their experiments. Rig proposes that they try more experiments, and him and FM kiss briefly.

;Plot Summary
FM and Rig work on an experiment in the engineering bay, trying to teach the taynix to teleport to a familiar place. She shows Chubs some caviar in a box, calling it “home”. She puts Chubs in a separate box and tells him to go to “home”. Though he doesn’t initially, he eventually teleports into the box. She tries the same experiment with two more slugs, with varying results. They head to the command room on Platform Prime, where Fine has been loaded into the communicator. Cobb calls Cuna, who responds.

Cobb tells them that he doesn’t know how to find them, and Cuna says that the enemy has fighters bombarding their location. Cuna sends the coordinates, which appear in Jorgen’s brain. The call ends, and Jeshua wants to inform the National Assembly to let them make a decision. The coordinates are fading from Jorgen’s memory, and Cobb tells him and Skyward Flight to go immediately.

;Plot Summary
Skyward Flight readies their planes, and they put several taynix inside Jorgen’s fighter. They all touch wings, and Jorgen teleports them to Cuna’s coordinates. They are met with the sight of an enormous space monster, which Cuna identifies over the comm as a mammoth starpod. It is burrowed into the rock, with incredibly long tentacles and a gaping maw. Cuna tells the group that they are on Sunreach, the research station built to study the creature. Krell fighters round the side of the creature, and they engage Skyward Flight. Jorgen uses his IMP during the battle, then uses a taynix to hyperjump away. He overshoots and ends up close to the starpod. Several Krell target him and fly towards him, and he hyperjumps again. The taynix don’t listen to his directions however, and he teleports close to the starpod’s mouth. His shield goes down and exposes him, and the Krell blow his ship to pieces.

;Plot Summary
Horrified, FM informs the rest of Skyward Flight that Jorgen is dead. They decide to proceed with the mission and free Cuna. Gill suddenly teleports onto FM’s dashboard, and she surprised but happy that Gill escaped. Gill teleports her into the research station, where Jorgen, Cuna, and Cuna's staff wait. She joyfully hugs Jorgen, glad that he is alive.

Cuna informs them that the station’s defenses are failing, and that the station’s life support generators will soon be destroyed, killing them. Jorgen’s exudes that the only course of action is to leave now, then allow himself to come back for the others. Gill suddenly teleports away, then returns with Fine, who had been on Detritus. FM quickly tells Jorgen to send the slugs images of their flight members. The slugs teleport away, then return with the members of Skyward Flight. As the life support systems begin to fail, they quickly huddle together as Jorgen concentrates. FM tells the taynix to take them to home, and they teleport away.
