Mayalaran was killed by her bonded Edgedancer when they abandoned the oath that bound them, believing the [[Nahel Bond]] would bring about the destruction of [[Roshar]] the way it had humanity's homeworld.{{book ref|sa3|113}}
At some point before the beginning of the story Adolin dueled a lighteyes named [[Tinalar]]. Against everyone's expectations he won the duel and secured the blade as his own. He never named it, believing it had a name of it's own and that it would be pretentious to change it. Adolin often speaks to the shardblade and imagines that it listens to him. He believes that something that feels like an extension of the soul itself is impossible to wield without feeling as though it too is alive.{{book ref|sa2|14}}

The most important duel of these duels being the one against [[Relis]], [[Elit Ruthar|Elit]], [[Abrobadar]] and [[Jakamav]]{{book ref|wor|56}}{{book ref|wor|57}}. It was also present at many battles, including the [[Battle of the Tower]]{{book ref|twok|66}}{{book ref|twok|67}} and the [[Battle of Narak]]{{book ref|wor|81}}{{book ref|wor|82}}{{book ref|wor|83}}{{book ref|wor|84}}.

Mayalaran and Adolin met for the first time when he crossed over into [[Shadesmar]]{{book ref|sa3|87}}{{book ref|sa3|89}} with [[Shallan]], [[Kaladin]], [[Vivenna]], [[Pattern]] and [[Sylphrena]] from the corrupted [[Oathgate]] in [[Kholinar]].{{book ref|sa3|85}} Pattern informs them all that Mayalaran is quite dead. Usually she will trail after Adolin but otherwise remain motionless{{book ref|sa3|89}}{{book ref|sa3|93}} and to go elsewhere must be lead by the hand.
 
When travelling with the [[Reachers]] Mayalaran is locked in a small room in the cargo hold by [[Captain Ico]] who calls her a deadeye.
