At some point before the beginning of the story Adolin dueled a lighteyes named [[Tinalar]]. Against everyone's expectations he won the duel and secured the blade as his own. He never named it, believing it had a name of it's own and that it would be pretentious to change it. Adolin often speaks to the shardblade and imagines that it listens to him. He believes that something that feels like an extension of the soul itself is impossible to wield without feeling as though it too is alive.{{book ref|sa2|14}}
