Mandras are seen to be used in Shadesmar to pull ships by lightspren{{book ref|sa3|99}}, [[Honorspren]]{{book ref|sa3|102}}{{book ref|sa3|108}} and most likely more as every ship in
[[File: Luckspren.png|thumb|right|Sketch of a luckspren from [[Shallan's sketchbook]]]] Because of Mandras' tendency to "drop" the sailors always employ at least two Mandras{{book ref|sa3|101}} so they do not end up stranded.{{book ref|sa3|99}} Once the ships have docked the Mandras are detached from the ship using long hooks and lead away.{{book ref|sa3|101}} [[Adolin]] wonders if they are attached to the stern of the ship to pull them from the docks{{book ref|sa3|101}} but given that Adolin is [[Alethi]], a people who are infamous for knowing little about sailing,{{book ref|sa3|12}} this is to be taken with a grain of salt.
