Lopen's family left [[Herdaz]] when he was a baby and he was raized in Alethkar{{book ref|sa2|41}} He has experienced great misfortunes in his life, like losing his left arm and being enslaved, but he never accepted these things as part of his identity{{wob ref|8436|Oathbringer San Diego signing|date=2017/11/13}}, and oftenwould jokedeven joke about beinghis a one-armed Herdazianplight.{{book ref|sa1|73}}{{book ref|sa2|12}}

Unlike many of the Bridge Four members, Lopen did not have a dark past. When Lopenhe was sent to the bridge crews, it was not because of any crime, but simply because he was a nuisance.{{wob ref|8259|Oathbringer Release Party|date=2017/11/13}} As he was both a Herdazian and a slave, it was likely the racist attitude of Alethi society that enabled this injustice.
 
While looking for recruits for [[Bridge Four]] among thea batch of newcomers sent to the bridge crews, [[Kaladin]] was moved to choose the only smiling person there: an optimistic Lopen who even requested to be picked, unaware of the danger that being part of Bridge Four entailed.{{book ref|sa1|32}}
 
As he would be of little use when carrying the bridge, Lopen was instead tasked to carry water for the crew during bridge runs. Later, Kaladin trained him in medical first aid and gave him medic duties as well.
