He calls on [[Kaladin]] to pick him to join [[Bridge Four]] when [[Kaladin]] comes looking for new recruits. Though a one armed man would not be good carrying bridges, Kaladin chooses him because, in contrary to all the other men, Lopen was smiling. When Kaladin asks why Lopen wanted to be picked, the response was
Because he can't carry a bridge due to his missing arm, Kaladin tells him to gather some water and accompany Bridge Four on the very next bridge run, so Lopen takes [[Dabbid]] and [[Hobber]] and they carry water for the bridgemen. Since [[Gaz]] seemed to have no issues with this the first time, Lopen and Dabbid continue bringing water on every following bridge run.
