He called on [[Kaladin]] to pick him to join [[Bridge Four]] when [[Kaladin]] comes looking for new recruits. Though a one armed man would not be good carrying bridges, Kaladin chose him because, in contrary to all the other men, Lopen was smiling. When Kaladin asked why Lopen asked him to pick him, he responded that it was because Kaladin was only looking for one.{{book ref|sa1|32}}
Because he couldn't carry a bridge due to his missing arm, Kaladin told him to gather some water and accompany Bridge Four on the very next bridgerun, so Lopen took [[Dabbid]] and [[Hobber]] and they carried water for the bridgemen. This habit entrenched and Lopen and Dabbid brought water on every following bridgerun. Lopen showed great talent in helping and improvising.
He often made fun of himself (he had many 'one armed Herdazian jokes'), because he knew that if he did not make fun of himself, other people would.
He was always interested in Kaladin absorbing Stormlight and eventually gained the ability restoring his missing arm. {{book ref|sa2|87}}
