Lopen's family left [[Herdaz]] when he was a baby, and he has never visited his homeland ever since.{{book ref|sa2|41}} At some point, he loses his left arm. Lopen never accepted his one-armed state as part of his identity{{wob ref|8436|Oathbringer San Diego signing|date=2017/11/13}}, and often jokes about it.

When [[Kaladin]] comes looking for new recruits for [[Bridge Four]], an optimistic Lopen requests to be picked, not knowing the dangers that being part of Bridge Four entailed.{{book ref|sa1|32}} Though a one-armed man would not be good at carrying bridges, Kaladin chooses him because he was smiling, unlike all the other men there.
As one of Kaladin's [[Knights Radiant#Squires|squire]]s, he volunteers to teach some of the hopefuls who want to join Bridge Four. He spends some time assuring the ground that although he was leaving for the sky, he still loved the ground and the ground should not miss him.
 
Lopen later becomes a [[Knight Radiant]] in his own right and is seen playing hide-and-seek with his spren, a male Windrunner spren named [[Rua]], after the [[Battle of Thaylen Field]].
