He called on [[Kaladin]] to pick him to join [[Bridge Four]] when [[Kaladin]] comes looking for new recruits. Though a one armed man would not be good carrying bridges, Kaladin chose him because, in contrary to all the other men, Lopen was smiling. He wanted to be the one who was best, and was picked.

He often made fun of himself (he had many 'one armed Herdazian jokes'), because he knew that if he did not make fun of himself, other people would. He laughed a lot, and was a generally good-natured man.

He was always interested in Kaladin absorbing Stormlight, and thought that if he figured out how to glow like Kaladin, women would love him. He tried very hard to take stormlight from gemstones, and eventually gained the ability. He used it to restoringrestore his missing arm. {{book ref|sa2|87}}
