History
Lopen's family left Herdaz when he was a baby, and he has never visited his homeland ever since.sa2 At some point, he loses his left arm. Lopen never accepted his one-armed state as part of his identity, and often jokes about it.
The racist attitude towards Herdazians in Alethkar somehow made it possible to send Lopen to the bridge crews without him committing any actual crime. The only reason he was sent there was because he annoyed somebody.
When Kaladin comes looking for new recruits for Bridge Four, an optimistic Lopen requests to be picked, not knowing the dangers that being part of Bridge Four entailed.sa1 Though a one-armed man would not be good at carrying bridges, Kaladin chooses him because he was smiling, unlike all the other men
He is always fascinated when Kaladin absorbs Stormlight, and says that women would love him if he learned to "glow" like Kaladin. He repeatedly attempts to Invest Stormlight from gemstones, and eventually succeeds. He uses it to restore his missing arm. sa2
