Despite being Herdazian, Lopen was born in Alethkar and has never been to Herdaz. Lopen ended up in the bridge crews because somebody found him very annoying. They wanted him to go away, and since he was a Herdazian it pretty easy to send him to the bridge crews .
When Kaladin comes looking for new recruits for Bridge Four, he calls on Kaladin to pick him. Though a one-armed man would not be good at carrying bridges, Kaladin chooses him because he was smiling, unlike all the other men. When Kaladin asks why Lopen wanted to be picked, he responds that Kaladin was the only one picking anyone.sa1

When Kaladin comes looking for new recruits for Bridge Four, he calls on Kaladin to pick him, and claims that he made this decision because the person who was picked was special, and all the others were not.sa1 Even though he didn't know what a bridge crew was at the time, he wanted to join Bridge Four. Because Lopen can't carry a bridge due to his missing arm, Kaladin tells him to gather some water and accompany Bridge Four on the very next bridge run. Since Gaz seems to have no issues with this the first time, Lopen and Dabbid continue bringing water on every following bridge run.

He often makes fun of himself (he has many "one-armed Herdazian jokes") and is extremely optimistic: despite being in a terrible situation, he laughs frequently. He refers to himself as "The Lopen", not because of any Herdazian tradition, but simply because he likes to .

He is always fascinated when Kaladin absorbs Stormlight, and says that women would love him if he learned to "glow" like Kaladin. He repeatedly attempts to Invest Stormlight from gemstones, and eventually succeeds. He uses it to restore his missing arm. sa2

He brings King Elhokar to his family's home for a period of time to hide him. Lopen's mother forces him to eat, claiming that no king can tell a Herdazian mother what to do in her own home. They don't want to have to lie when they tell people that they don't have King Elhokar with them, so they persuade him to abdicate in favor of Lopen for about fifteen minutes .

He is eventually a squire, and volunteers to teach some of the hopefuls who want to join Bridge Four. He spends some time assuring the ground that although he was leaving for the sky, he still loved the ground and the ground should not miss him.
