He called on [[Kaladin]] to pick him to join [[Bridge Four]] when [[Kaladin]] comes looking for new recruits. Though an one armed man is not good in carrying bridges Kaladin decided for him because in contrary to all the other men Lopen was smiling. When Kaladin asked why Lopen asked him to pick him, he responded that it was because Kaladin was only looking for one.{{ref|b|sa1|c|32}}
Because he couldn't carry a bridge Kaladin told him to gather some water and accompany Bridge Four on the very next bridgerun, so Lopen took [[Dabbid]] and [[Hobber]] and they carried water for the bridgemen. This habit entrenched and Lopen and Dabbid brought water on every following bridgerun. Lopen showed great talent in helping and improvising.
