During the advancement ceremony for all of the acolents, a group of Kertzians launch a surprise attack on the ceremony. The Kertzians kill virtually everyone, leading Kenton to believe that he is the only survivor.{{book ref|ws1|3}} He is found hurt and dehydrated by [[Khriss]] and her party. After they revive him with water, Kenton agrees to be their guide and accompanies them to the city of [[Kezare]]. There, he learns that there are other survivors of the attack.{{book ref|ws1|4}}
