He is among a group of relatively unimportant young lords (along with his cousin [[Waren]] and [[Ramear]]) whom [[Hrathen]] and [[Dilaf]] approach with a proposal to convert to [[Shu-Dereth]]. Hrathen plans to start his conversion of Arelon with lesser nobles, and believes that more important nobles will join them as he destabilizes the government.{{book ref|Elantris|9}}
 
Idan is initially confused as to how converting will benefit him and the other nobles, and wonders who Hrathen perceives as the enemies of the Derethi. Hrathen appeals to the nobles' underlying insecurity and thirst for power by pointing out that many Arelish still cling to the idea that the [[Elantrian]]s will one day return, which undermines the power of the throne. Idan is easily swayed to his cause, but Hrathen does not place any value on his change of heart since he was too easy to convince.{{book ref|Elantris|9}}

Forma parte de un grupo de jóvenes nobles relativamente poco importantes (junto con su primo [[Waren]] y [[Ramear]]) a los que [[Hrathen]] y [[Dilaf]] se acercan con la propuesta de convertirlos al [[Shu-Dereth]]. Hrathen planea comenzar su conversión de Arelon con nobles menores, y cree que los más importantes se les unirán a medida que desestabilice el gobierno.{{book ref|Elantris|9}}
 
En un principio, Idan se muestra confuso en cuanto a cómo la conversión le beneficiará a él y a los demás nobles, y se pregunta a quiénes percibe Hrathen como enemigos de los derethi. Hrathen apela a la inseguridad subyacente de los nobles y a su sed de poder señalando que muchos arelenos aún se aferran a la idea de que los [[elantrino]]s volverán algún día, lo que socava el poder del trono.
