Gaz is a greedy man who, like most bullies, quickly backs down when confronted. For some reason he has to pay back debts to [[Lamaril]], and the rates are so high that he can only manage to repay [[Lamaril]] by using the bribes that [[Kaladin]] gave him.{{book ref|sa1|30}} He is among the more antagonistic towards [[Kaladin]], often taking special delight in attempting to kill off [[Bridge Four]]. He does, however, accept Kaladin's bribes so that Kaladin can stay in control of Bridge Four.
He disappears after one of the bridgeruns,{{book ref|sa1|57}} which is revealed to be because of desertion.Later [[Hashal]] takes care to deflect any of [[Kaladin]]s questions regarding where he went to, as she did not want the bridgemen to know that even their superior had deserted.
[[Shallan]] encounters Gaz with a group of deserters in the [[Frostlands]]. She vows to give them pardons upon returning to the Shattered Plains if they accompany her there. Shallan's respectful treatment of Gaz improves his attitude towards his position and makes him extremely loyal to her. Upon returning to the Shattered Plains he receives his pardon and gains a permanent position as one of Shallan's bodyguards.
