Cuando el enemigo cargó, el escuadrón retrocedió, dejando a Dem, Tien y su compañero expuestos. Los chicos fueron inmediatamente masacrados, pero la estrategia de Varth funcionó, ya que la interrupción del impulso enemigo permitió un contraataque. Amaram y su caballería luego avanzaron y eliminaron a los enemigos agrupados. Varth se dio cuenta de que los chicos y muchos otros hombres habían sido efectivamente sacrificados para hacer lucir bien a Amaram.{{book ref|sa1|67}}
As the enemy charged, the squad pulled back, leaving Dem, Tien, and their companion exposed. The boys were immediately slaughtered, but Varth's strategy worked, as the disruption to the enemy's momentum allowed for a counterattack. Amaram and his cavalry then swept in and wiped out the bunched-up enemies. Varth realized that the boys and many other men had effectively been sacrificed in order to make Amaram look good.{{book ref|sa1|67}}
