Many believe the author of the first of these letters is Hoid. An excellent argument in favor of this point has been posted on the forums. Sanderson confirmed that we "may have read that Hoid has specific beef with Rayse," and given that the Letter is the only writing that mentions anyone specifically having a grudge against Rayse, this can be seen as an acknowledgement that Hoid wrote the First Letter. The Second Letter, from the epigraphs of Words of Radiance, indicates that the original writer had taken on a name describing one of his "presumed virtues". This could be inferred to mean his "wit", which would serve to re-enforce the theory that Wit (known to be Hoid) was the author of the original Letterwor. Sanderson also made no correction when asked about "Hoid's letter," in a Q&A session.

The Recipient's identity is less clear, but their non-intervention policy and some other details may suggest that it is Frost, from Dragonsteel.

In Words of Radiance, a group of epigraphs seem to reply to this letter, indicating that the original writer had taken on a name that describes one of his "presumed virtues". This could be inferred to mean his "wit", which would serve to re-enforce the theory that Wit (known to be Hoid) was the author of the original Letter. wor Another strong implication is given in an interview question about the "old reptile" when the mentioning of Hoid as author of the First Letter is refused. The recipient's non-intervention policy may indicate that he is Frost.
