Contacting New Artists

When you find a piece of fan art you would like to feature anywhere on the Coppermind, from an artist we haven't worked with in the past, you must first get their permission. To help promote artists in the community, as well as to make the process of crediting and keeping track of artists we've contacted in the past, we create an artist's page under Coppermind: Artists for each new artist. In doing so, we try to get some basic input from the artist:

  • First and foremost, their permission to use the art piece in question. This "license" can usually be one of three types - a general permission for us to use anything relevant to the Wiki, a general permission to use anything relevant to the Wiki up until this point (with future pieces usually requiring individual permissions), or a case-by-case permission.
  • Online presence. The artists know best which of their websites and social media accounts they use the most and want to drive traffic towards. So we ask. As a follow-up, you can ask which one of their sites they want individual pieces credited to (e.g. if a painting is uploaded to both Instagram and ArtStation).
  • Alias. Some artists prefer to be known by their real name(s), some by their nickname(s), or company name, or some combination of these. Ask how they want to be known and credited.
  • Bio. Ask the artist if they want to write their own bio/description.
  • Contact information. Sometimes we reach out to artists through platforms they barely use. Ask them how to contact them in the future.

Contact Form Templates

You don't need to use any of these templates but they are available as a reference.

Short Form / Opener

Before digging into details about art usage and contact forms it is best to find out if the artist is open to the idea of having their art on the Coppermind. It's unlikely that they won't be, but it's still polite to ask.

Hello!

I am an editor for the Coppermind (a Brandon Sanderson wiki, you can find it here: https://coppermind.net/ ). I am reaching out to you because I think your [...] will make a great addition to [...], and I would like to feature it there with your permission. You will, of course, be credited.

Is this something you would be interested in?

Thanks!
