'''Ash''' was the [[Lord Ruler]]'s attempt to protect the world from the sun by blocking some of its light. It was a black, flaky substance produced by the volcanoes or [[ashmounts]].
Left unchecked, ash would quickly cover the world. However, while the Lord Ruler held the power at the [[Well of Ascension]], he attempted to mitigate the bad effects of the ash by re-engineering the the flora and fauna of [[Scadrial]] to live with and break down the constant influx of ash.
