Brandon first mentioned the series at the release party for ''[[Shadows of Self]]''.{{cite}} It was then obliquely referenced in the 2015 State of the Sanderson as a "New YA Series".{{ref|name=sots15}} He currently plans for it to be his next project, following the completion of ''[[Oathbringer]]'' with an eventual 2018 release.{{ref|name=sots16}}
Brandon is planning to write all three books in the series before their release, similar to what he did for the [[Mistborn]] series. The release is currently planned for mid 2020.{{ref|name=ofs}}
