Spensa slipped into the base, but was captured along with M-Bot, who pretended to be a simple cleaning drone. The group of Broadsiders, members of [[Cutlass Flight]], treated Spensa fairly well, keeping her busy. Spensa got to know the various members of the crew as she did so, meanwhile having cytonic conversations with Chet, who had been wounded making a distraction. Spensa got permission for M-Bot to help her clean different things for the pirates, and eventually got M-Bot in position to upload himself into one of the pirate starfighters. He took control of it just in time, saving Spensa as she was attacked by [[Peg]], who attacked her since she knew Spensa to be a true killer.{{book ref|sky3|21}} M-Bot tried flying as they escaped, but didn’t do very well. Spensa tried to go back for her father’s pin, but found it missing. Spensa returned to the Broadsiders with Chet after certain terms were made, and Spensa was allowed to upload M-Bot to the Broadsiders’ best ship.{{book ref|sky3|23}}
Spensa se coló en la base, pero fue capturada junto con M-Bot, que se hizo pasar por un simple dron de limpieza. El grupo de los Costaderos, miembros del [[Escuadrón Alfanje]], trató bastante bien a Spensa, manteniéndola ocupada. Spensa fue conociendo a los distintos miembros de la tripulación a medida que lo hacía, mientras mantenía conversaciones citónicas con Chet, que había sido herido haciendo una distracción. Spensa consiguió permiso para que M-Bot la ayudara a limpiar distintas cosas para los piratas, y finalmente consiguió que M-Bot se colocara en posición para cargarse en uno de los cazas estelares piratas. Tomó el control del mismo justo a tiempo, salvando a Spensa cuando era atacada por [[Palo]], que la atacó ya que sabía que Spensa era una verdadera asesina.{{book ref|sky3|21}} M-Bot intentó volar mientras escapaban, pero no lo hizo muy bien. Spensa intentó volver a por la insignia de su padre, pero había desaparecido. Spensa volvió a los Costaderos con Chet después de que se establecieran ciertos términos, y a Spensa se le permitió cargar a M-Bot en la mejor nave de los Costaderos.{{book ref|sky3|23}}

Poco después, cinco de las facciones piratas volaron hacia Fuerteseguro y se enfrentaron a los pilotos de la Supremacía y a la facción de los Cañoneros, de la que formaba parte Hesho. Spensa volvió a enfrentarse a Hesho, que fue poseído por un zapador. Spensa consiguió derrotarlo mediante engaños, utilizando viejos instintos de entrenamiento a los que aún obedecía inconscientemente. Durante la batalla, un zapador devoraba un planeta en el otro lado, haciendo aparecer de la nada trozos de materia de la alguna-parte.{{book ref|sky3|34}} Hesho se unió a Spensa tras su derrota, y la facción de los Cañoneros abandonó la batalla tras una tregua temporal. Palo habló con [[Lorn]], el comandante de la base de Fuerteseguro, cuya familia estaba cautiva de la Supremacía. Palo ideó un plan para recuperar a la familia de Lorn, y este les permitió hacerse con el control de la base.{{book ref|sky3|36}}
As part of their agreement, Spensa and Chet got to visit the next portal, learning about early cytonics and discovering that the next portal is in [[Surehold]], the Superiority’s main base in the nowhere. Afterward, Spensa fought in a battle for the title of Pirate Champion, Peg insisting a victory would unite the factions. The enemy champion proved to be Hesho, who had survived by being sucked into space by being transported to the nowhere. He had lost all his memories, however. Spensa beat him, then discovered that Peg had been conspiring with her sons, who led other factions, to unite the pirates in an attack on Surehold.{{book ref|sky3|32}}
 
Soon after, five of the pirate factions flew towards Surehold, and engaged with the Superiority’s pilots and the Cannonade Faction, which Hesho was a part of. Spensa engaged with Hesho again, who became possessed by a delver. Spensa managed to defeat him through trickery, using old training instincts he still unconsciously still obeyed. During the battle, a delver on the other side was devouring a planet, causing chunks of matter from the somewhere to appear out of thin air.{{book ref|sky3|34}} Hesho joined Spensa after his defeat, and the Cannonade Faction left the battle after a temporary truce was called. Peg talked with [[Lorn]], the base commander of Surehold, whose family was being held captive by the Superiority. Peg devised a plan to get Lorn’s family back, and Lorn allowed them to take over the base.{{book ref|sky3|36}}
