Hrathen is [[Fjordell]], and like other followers of [[Shu-Dereth]] he views [[Aonic]] magic as "heathen".{{book ref|Elantris|12}} Many people in Fjordell do not even believe that seons exist.{{book ref|Elantris|12}} Hrathen has always believed that they are real, but he has several misconceptions about them, including an assumption that they are created by [[Elantrian]]s.{{book ref|Elantris|12}} Hrathen ascends the ranks of the Derethi church and becomes one of twenty gyorns, high priests that directly serve [[Wyrn]] [[Wulfden]].{{book ref|Elantris|5}} He is shocked to learn that Wyrn and the other gyorns each have a seon that they use for communication, and has to be convinced by Wyrn over a period of several years that their use by the Derethi is justified.{{book ref|Elantris|12}} It is not known how the Derethi church originally obtained the seons.
