During the [[Final Empire]], the square was commonly used by the Lord Ruler to perform public executions.{{book ref|mb1|26}} All men in Luthadel were required to attend the executions, and would be released from work to do so. Despite the square's size, it did not have enough room to contain all of the attendees, even if people watched from nearby rooftops, but bleachers were set up for the nobility.{{book ref|mb1|26}} [[Steel Inquisitor]]s would behead prisoners and direct the blood into the fountain basins, making them run red.{{book ref|mb1|26}}
[[Kelsier]] made his final stand against the Lord Ruler at a smaller courtyard square nearby{{book ref|mb1|33}} that later became known as the [[Square of the Survivor]].{{book ref|mb1|36}} When Kelsier freed a number of prisoners and killed many of the Lord Ruler's soldiers in the courtyard, a large number of skaa arrived on the scene quickly; they had been at the Fountain Square for an execution ceremony that was assumed to be retribution for Kelsier's destruction of the [[Pits of Hathsin]].{{book ref|mb1|33}} The Lord Ruler and many of his soldiers, [[Obligator]]s, and Inquisitors soon followed.{{book ref|mb1|34}}
