Alcatraz fights against getting outfitted in a traditional manor befitting of a former monarch of Mokia. Interrupting a meeting between Leavenworth Smedry and other monarchs, Alcatraz ends up letting the world know his plan to fight against the Librarians. Forming a plan to infiltrate Highbrary, Alcatraz with his Grandpa, and Kaz, steal a ship, bringing his mother Shasta Smedry with them for assistance.

The group decides to pick up Dif, another Smedry to help with the infiltration. Alcatraz immediately dislikes Dif after they get him from the Worldspire, however they continue on to Highbrary.

Finding a purple dome protecting the city on arrival, the ship is attacked by Librarian forces. Struggling to break through the defensive arrangement, the Unified Free Kingdoms Air Guard comes to assist. Destroying the dome by use of Shamefiller's Lenses, the group splits up with Alcatraz leading after Dif pushes him out of the ship.

Attacked by Librarians, they are rescued by the arrival of Himalaya Smedry and Folsom Smedry, who are leading a group of Librarian Liberation Libationists. The LLL, helps infiltrate Highbrary, and Alcatraz splits off with Dif and Shasta, searching for Attica Smedry.

Running into a group of Librarians, Alcatraz in disguise gets sent to fight off a dangerous monster, which ends up being a group of Dinosaurs from Nalhalla, who once again have been captured on a research trip. During the process, Alcatraz and Dif's identities accidentally get revealed, scaring away the group of Librarians. Alcatraz realizes how Attica must have snuck in by disguising himself as a Curator of Alexandria, to appear as a ghost like figure.

Confronting Attica, he knocks out Shasta who was threatening him with a gun, before he tries to convince Alcatraz of the good of his goal. Grandpa Smedry and Draulin arrive, before Dif shoots Grandpa, revealing himself as a Librarian in disguise as a Smedry he killed. It turns out Dif is not just a Librarian, he is the Librarian, Biblioden.

Dif takes Alcatraz and his father hostage, and plans to use one of them in a ritual sacrifice to create a bloodforged lens. Alcatraz manages to knock a vial of antidote of the Librarians weapons into the ventilation system, to wake up Bastille who they had brought with them in the hope of awakening again. Bastille awakes and starts to fight her way forward to rescue Alcatraz, however Dif sacrifices Attica, and runs off to the Worldspire to use the lens.

Alcatraz is left in a stupor, unable to process properly what has just happened. The self-destruct has not been turned off in Highbrary though, and the whole place is almost about to blow. Highbrary gets destroyed and the Librarians have to cover-up all that transpired.

Bastille reveals in a note that Grandpa Smedry survived, and that more is yet to happen, though Alcatraz does not wish to tell the end of the story. She vows to write the last book.

In reality, there was always a sixth book planned. Tor was one of the publishers willing to promote the five-book series with the grand reveal at the end: that there would actually be a sixth book, written from another character's perspective. The idea was that Alcatraz would end his narrative with his failure, but the sixth book would confirm to the readers that he was indeed a hero.
