Mankind fears the [[Desolation]]s. There were 99 desolations and the [[Last Desolation]] happened 4,500 years ago and very little knowledge about these events has survived. It is known that the Heralds are sent during every desolation to aid mankind in their survival. During the aftermath of the last desolation, the Heralds abandonabandoned their blades and breakbroke the [[Oathpact]]. The prelude to the Stormlight archiveArchive indicates that they abandoned the oathpact partly because they arewere tired of returning to what ishas been described to beas a place of torture and pain, and partly in the hope that if they dondidn't fightreturn it might stop the cycle of desolations and the wasting of lives. Though they left one of their order behind in order to stop [[Odium]] and the [[Voidbringers]] from once again shattering the world.
