El sistema moderno de altos príncipes se remonta al último monarca (anterior a Gavilar Kholin) que unificó Alezkar, [[Sadees]] el Hacedor de Soles. Tras su muerte, su imperio no duró mucho. Nunca se molestó en escoger un heredero, y sus diez hijos no se pudieron poner de acuerdo sobre a quién querían dar su apoyo.{{book ref|sa3|19}} Rápidamente, empezaron a luchar los unos contra los otros, y el imperio colapsó en menos de una generación. Estos diez hijos fundaron los diez principados de Alezkar, coronándose a ellos mismos como altos príncipes del reino desunido, cada uno convirtiéndose en el rey "de facto" en sus propias tierras. Durante este tiempo, Alezkar prácticamente era una coalición floja de diez estados separados, siendo un reino unificado solo en nombre.

He had never bothered to choose an heir, and his ten sons could not decide among themselves who they wished to support.{{book ref|sa3|19}} They quickly turned to infighting, and the empire collapsed in less than a generation. These ten sons founded the ten princedoms of Alethkar, crowning themselves the highprinces of a disunified kingdom, each being a ''de facto'' king in his own lands. During this time, Alethkar was effectively a loose coalition of ten separate states, being a unified kingdom in name only.
