The Coppermind Kindle Dictionary is a custom made dictionary for Brandon Sanderson's novels, and the cosmere.

The dictionary was created using the information from The Coppermind (this wiki). It will work just like any Kindle dictionary. Select a word while reading that has an article on this site (as of the date the dictionary was created) and the details for that page will display in a popup. Choose to see more of the definition and you will get the majority of the article in an easy to read format. This dictionary is best used for re-reads or to help remember content from previous books while reading a new one. It is NOT recommended to use a version that contains information for a book you are reading for the first time.

The content of the dictionary does not update dynamically but may contain spoilers for novels already published including supposition by the article's author and confirmed facts by Brandon outside of the novels.

When provided by the article's author spoiler notices are included above the content identified as a spoiler.

Downloads

Below are download links for different version of the dictionary. You can choose which one is best for you.

The "All Books Coppermind" is the most complete and recommended! The others may be lacking information that has been considered more Cosmere than Book series specific. (ie Hoid/Wit and Shards). Additional Cosmere articles have been added ONLY to the "Stormlight Coppermind", in addition to the "All Books Coppermind".

Install Instructions

After downloading the dictionary there are three easy ways to load it onto your Kindle.

  • Use your Kindle email address provided by Amazon and email the Coppermind.mobi file to your Kindle directly.
  • Plug your Kindle in and copy the Coppermind.mobi file from your computer into your dictionaries directory on your Kindle
  • Download and install the Calibre E-book management software.
    • Drag and drop the Coppermind.mobi file into the Calibre window.
    • Plug your Kindle into the computer
    • Right click Coppermind.mobi and select "Send to Device" and then "Send to Main Memory". If those options are not available your Kindle probably was not recognized by your computer. This software can also be used to change the file to an epub which can be used for reference purposes in iBooks or a Nook, though not as a look-up capable dictionary

Under your settings on the Kindle you will find a Dictionary menu to change your primary dictionary. Each Kindle model is slightly different but a quick Google search should help. Newer Kindles will search through each of your dictionaries until it finds a definition, but I would still recommend making Coppermind your primary so that common terms or names that are also historical are matched to Coppermind first instead of your standard dictionary.

It is also possible to change your default dictionary on the Kindle app for Android or IOS but it involves tricking the app into thinking the Coppermind dictionary is your default provided dictionary - instructions can be found here but proceed at your own risk.

Dictionary Methodolgy

In creating this dictionary all articles in Coppermind were used with the exception of Books and Out of Universe. This did create some duplication which was resolved during processing.

Each article is included in it's entirety (including character info tables) exluding references and graphics/captions. Earlier version excluded quotes, but those have been added in. I created an application that leverages the Wikimedia export format to grab ALL content. All redirects were also followed to articles and even to subsections of articles. This data was parsed for the applicable information and formated it for viewing as a Kindle dictionary. I then used a program called mobigen to convert it into a .mobi file.

Each article title is a dictionary entry and fully retrievable by selecting a word on the Kindle while reading. If a term redirects to another term (Wax --> Waxillium) both terms have an entry, however the redirected one will note the articles true name (Wax - Redirected to Waxillium) to avoid confusion on the articles contents. This would be important in situations like Hoid and his aliases. When an article has a multiple term name such as Dalinar Kholin the word Dalinar will bring up information for Dalinar Kholin, however the name Kholin will bring up multiple numbered articles for every article containing the term Kholin, such as Elhokar Kholin. These multiple definitions are listed in order of most to least content. This helps to get you what you need immediately - Looking up Sadeas for example brings information on Torol Sadeas first and his wife second. Common words (such as of, the, in, a, de, and la) were excluded.

Other improvements include better bullet and table support as well as collapsing entries to reduce duplication.
