The ability to Bind Surges is not innate to native Rosharans. People are granted this ability by forming bonds with spren. This bond is initiated by behaving in a manner that attracts that type of spren. {{ref|?|608|15|Brandon talking about the link between his magic-systems}} It is believed that Surgebinding is the magic-system of [[Honor]]. So someone needs to act honorable to become a Surgebinder. Alternative views believe Honor and Cultivation merged their spiritual essence, and that the spren associated with Surgebinding have varying degrees of Investiture from each Shard.
 
By acting in harmony with a certain type of spren, one can attract aand [[spren]],form thata bondsbond with them. The closer the relativebond personthe better able to access Surgebinding. It is hypothesized that speaking the Ideals strengthens and reinforces the Spren-bond. {{clarify|it has not been confirmed that this is called the Nahel Bond}} An effect of that bond is that the bonded person has acces to Surges.
