During the unification of Alethkar, Navani and Ialai Sadeas huddled toghether at dinners; conspiring on how to stabilize the kingdom their husbands were trying to conquer.{{book ref|sa3|96}}. They were very close friends. Navani and Ialai were responsible for finding [[Dalinar]] a wife which would give them political advantage.{{book ref|sa3|19}}
During Gavilar’s last days, he had gone strange. As he had grown more and more distracted, Navani herself had worked to keep squabbling lighteyes from sundering the kingdom. {{book ref|sa3|109}} She knew about his small gemstone. {{book ref|sa3|122}}
After Gavilar's death at the hands of [[Szeth]], Navani was left without a defined position in Alethi society as her son assumed the throne. {{book ref|sa1|Prologue}}
Initially, she stayed in Kholinar to aid Elhokar's wife, [[Aesudan Kholin|Aesudan]], in ruling the kingdom as much of Alethi society moved to the [[Shattered Plains]] to fight the [[Parshendi]] responsible for Gavilar's death. {{book ref|sa1|12}} After some years, she moved to the Shattered Plains after realizing that the seat of power had essentially transferred to there.{{book ref|sa2|67}}
